You won't have any issues with it that are the bikes fault. Enjoy the new ride. Post pics when you pick it up!

We just bought this exact bike this past Saturday for my son as part of his college graduation present ... matt black ... we both test rode it before buying ... we both loved it! After an incredible journey of research and chatting here (thanks everyone!) and test riding, we came to the conclusion that we were going to buy the best <$700 bike we could for the way he was going to use it from the dealer with whom we felt the most comfortable for support after the sale ... in this case, the dealer ended up being the only dealer in our area that sells Specialized and the bike ended up being the Hardrock Sport Disc 29er ... great for both paved urban and off-road single track trails ... awesome bike! I want one!!!

I do not. I hang around the shops enugh to know which ones are good value. That is one of them. a Comp Disc 29r MTB for less than a grand. It can't not be worth it.

pics!

here are the pics. Idk how to make them big like everyone else. can someone tell me how?
and i love the geometry and avid bb5s are great. lockout feature is really nice. those were the two reasons why i ent for the sport instead of the normal.
pedals seem abit iffy. any opinions or experience with them? all i can get is that they are "composite platforms" from bikepedia. dont have a brand on them so i dont know if composite is the brand or not.

you might want to go clipless pretty soon. you can get double-sided pedals for when you dont want bike shoes, but clipless is the way to go.

I refuse to run platforms on a 26 HT, but on a 29er, I could be ok without clipless, depending on the trail. Some nicer alu platforms may be all you need. Take care of the bike, and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Congrats!

Depending on where you are going, a CamelBak is priceless.

Congrats on your new bike.

Once you go clipless buy two pairs of mtb shoes for those muddy rainy days.

Ive been thinking about clipless and the double sided one would probally work best for me. Are clipless pedals really that valuable? what are there streangths and weaknesses?

The double sided pedals are not good IMO. I can outride myself in flats in every situation except the hard "ups" (steep climbs). I do about 70/30. Clips/flats respectively. The problem with the 2 in 1 pedals is the weight balance is off so when you come out of the pedals the clips side is down, lots of fumbling. Decent commuter pedal but if i'm on the street I'm in clips anyways... Some of the advice your getting is pretty suspect. Here's my very suspect advice: Get some Shimano 520's and a cheapish pair of mountain bike clipless shoes. Try em out and compare to your current flat pedals. If you like the flats better get a nice set of flats (use search but tons of good ones out there) and some good flat shoes (5-10 impacts FTW). You need to make up your own mind.

Tons of pros and cons for both. Try search function. I suck at articulating my thoughts or I would list some, lol. Did I mention sweet bike???

Nice bike, gives me bike envy.

I haven't used clips/clipless pedals on a mountain bike but on the road my pedaling is a lot smoother and my legs are a lot less tired even though I'm going faster. It's very interesting. I'm not a great mountain biker yet (a n00b) so I don't trust myself with toe clips or clipless pedals on single tracks (all of them around here have lovely rocks and ruts I take completely wrong haha) but for nice trails I would have no problem with them for speed. It just depends on what you want to do .

I thought that that would be a problem with 2 in 1 pedals but didnt think it would be that much trouble.
i might just try What you have proposed. are used bike shoes any good? Im still debating on wether or not i should really use clipless yet. as i am still newish as Max C. is and i tend to come to some abrupts stops. there is especially one section of a trail were i have to go slow but fast enough to not fall over to my left because there is a STEEP hill with rocks and trees and bum bottles. Im just wondering if it would be better if i got used to my balance first. Or would just some street and baby trail training with the clipless be good enough for me to handle them better in situations stated above

I'm in the clipless camp. I have been riding them off-road since the early 90's and can't imagine riding without them. But whatever, just get out there and get the bike dirty!

What your saying makes total sense, didn't know you were new to MTBing in general. Only problem I see is those pedals are garbage, shame on specy for selling a nice MTB with those plastic pedals. So buy a decent pedal, with pins for grip and maybe some bike specific shoes (read 5-10 again) let her rip til your comfortable. In the mean time keep riding and work your way up to the nastier terrain...

Im not completely new but i still have alot to learn. I think it is a good choice for me to stick with platform and i will look into those shoes. I have been getting it pretty dirty but still clean it alot 'cus its in the new phase. once i get the first scratch ill be more relaxed im sure. Thanks for all of the help. Any more opinions on shoes would be good also.

Mostly all of the double sides I've seen go clip side up when you step off? Being that most of the material has to be towards the platform
side to allow the cleats to clip in.,,,,BD
