All these new GT bikes, are they what they used to be? With all the new ownership and stuff has quality changed? What does everybody think of GT?

While i'm posting, is the GT Avalanche 2.0 a good buy?

Thanks guys

The best thing I can say about GT bikes at this point is that they are "suspect". This holds especially true for their entry-level to mid-range models. For the money, the Specialized HardRock Sport Disc and Specialized Rockhopper are comparable in price and IMHO offer a better selection of frame and component quality without the questionable build factour.

The Specialized are a bit higher in price, but for $399 AU would you think the GT Avalanche 2.0 would be a good deal?

That's always the danger with comparing prices in different economies. Over here, the Specialized HardRock Sport Disc actually retails for USD$10 less than the GT Avalanche 2.0. But I guess you're looking at a pretty good price if you're seeing it at AUD$399 because GT lists its MSRP at AUD$599. Whether or not that's a good deal is a different story.

It seems to me that most people consider the Specialized Hardrocks (at various levels) to be some of the better entry-level bikes around. I have the Pro disc and like it quite a bit. As a side note, is GT's parent company the same as Trek/Fisher (Bontrager?) or what? I was thinking that it was a different company but just wanted to be sure. Assuming that it's NOT the same parent company... who IS GT's parent company?

Pacific Cycle owns the GT brand as well as Schwinn, Mongoose, Pacific, Dyno, Murray and Roadmaster. Pacific Cycle purchased GT back in the fall of 2001 after GT declared bankruptcy. I think a statement could be made about the fact that the press release came out on 11 Sept. 2001 but I'll leave that to someone else.

Yikes! GT is owned by the same company that makes Murray & Roadmaster? whoa... that's no good. I'd rather have a 15 year old in Taiwan make my frame than a 9 year old in Bangladesh!

it is owned by pacific, but they cant make all crappy bikes, GT trek and fisher are still offering high end bikes. Dont worry about pacific, because if a company was that bad would they have names like c. duncan, andrew shandro, and brian lopes. pacific is a huge company that has great companies under their name and they dont need to turn good companys into crap any more.

I thought Trek owned themselves(does that even make sense?) and that Trek owned Gary Fisher/Klein/Lemond/Etc.

Trek and Pacific are seperate companies aren't they?

It will be mostly road riding, but i want it to have the capability for un-paved roads, and some off-road courses. A bit of all round.

Yep, it'll be fine for what you want to do. I know someone with one who does what you are intending to do on yours and absolutely loves it.
