I Have already bought it but I want to know what people think. Yesterday I bought a brand new Trek 4300 disk for an incredible price! I love the 27 speed drivetrain and the hydraulic disk brakes but what points of this bike may be, for a lack of a better term, "inferior" Because eventually I'm going to start buying higher grade components. Any thoughts? Thanks alot in advance!-Cole T.

Which would you buy?

Stumpjumper FSR Comp 29 - $2800 - https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/mountain/stumpjumperfsr/stumpjumperfsrcomp29

Motobecane Fantom 29er FS Sram X9 30 speed - $1500 - https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...m_29_fs_x9.htm
X9 equipped compared to the x7/x9 stumpy and 1300 bucks cheaper.

Motobecane Fantom 29er FS Sram X0 30 speed - $2200 - https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...29_fs_xo30.htm
All XO and still 600 cheaper than the stumpy.

I'm not so concerned with things like bike shop service, or assembly or such and more concerned about the bike itself. I do have to admit that even with the price difference I am still leaning towards the stumpy... Is that insane?

Does anyone read this thread? I didn't create a new one because this seemed the right place for this...

Alright, I'll start by saying I'm a long-time road guy looking to do some off-road work as well. I came across a 2009 Trek Series 6 6000 on my local CL. I haven't been to check it out in person yet but the pictures look like it's in pretty good shape. So my question is, barring anything that would come up in a personal inspection, would you guys think $300 would be a good deal for it? Guy said he needs the money for tires on his van and never rides anymore which makes me think it's probably in need of a tune-up. It seems like a pretty good deal based on the limted amount I could find on the web.

Not at all. I would go with the Stumpy.

You did well . . . wish more people would.

I actually started this as a joke thread but people are actually starting to use it for its intended purpose. Now we just need more responders to read it and reply.

Why?
Frame? Suspension? Fork? Geometry?
Why choose the Stumpy?

If yall don't mind I was wondering If i could get an idea of what this is worth https://www.ebay.com/itm/BRIDGESTONE-...item35bf83020d

Hes been having trouble selling it and I wonder if its because of something i missed or if the mb-3s arent worth that much. I'm really new to this so any help would be appreciated. Also I just wanted to check, this might be a stupid question but since the mb-3 has more of a road bike style frame does the road bike sizing apply? I'm around 5' 7" on a good day and just want to make sure this fits me. Thanks for all the help

Hey Mountain Bike folks I'm a complete mountain bike / modern bike noob , I'm a decent mechanic and knowledgeable in general about bikes but my forte is pre 1980 road bikes or so. I had the opportunity to do my first real mountain biking this weekend and LOVED it , I rode on my cousins 2003 (I think?) Specialized Enduro (pictured below) , currently set up as a 1x8. He's been trying to sell me the bike for a while , and is currently asking $600. Just wondering what , approxish, this bike would be worth (I understand it's just a guess) and if this would be a worthy first MTB. I don't need anything for commuting or light trails in town , got that covered with my other bikes.

sorry the pics suck , just working off what I've got right now.

Cheers !

VERY worthy bike. I personally liked the semi-monocoque Enduros like that. That appears to be a 2002 Enduro FSR. $600 is a bit stiff, even though it was a $1,600 bike in its day. $500-ish or so may be more reasonable.

DO ask your cousin if he got the seatstays replaced in Specialized's warranty recall for that model (https://www.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/...SR_25Apr02.pdf and https://blackmountainbicycles.com/art...call-pg122.htm). Seatstay portion of the rear triangle was susceptible to cracking and Spec was replacing them free of charge at the time.

Hello!
I am looking for a mountainbike. I have looked at the Merida "Birkebeineren Speed". (1750 USD)
https://www.merida.no/birkebeiner-speed-d.198496.no.html

The second think I look at is a Scott Aspect 60, (1.220 USD)
https://www.scott-sports.com/global/e...-aspect-60-xl/

And the last one is a Univega Alpina HT 29.5. (1750 USD)
https://www.univega.com/de/bikes/mode...na-ht-295.html

Thanks for any help :-)

So i'm a roadie by nature, but I'm developing a serious itch to get a mountain bike. I think I've narrowed it down to the Cannondale Trail 29er 5, and the Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc 29. Both are in my price range, and are offered by my LBS. I live in the dry and somewhat rocky Mojave desert of southern CA. I really haven't the slightest clue about what to look for in a mountain bike, so can you kind folks please offer me your opinions? Thanks.

Hi guys, I am in the market for a new fork for my low low low end bike. The fork recently crapped out but it was horrible anyways. So, I've got down to these two different forks. I know theyre very low end but I can get them for relatively cheap within my budget. Based on the specs and your knowledge, I hope you guys can help me make a decision here. Also I'm a newbie so cut me some slack here

Hi,
I would really appreciate some advice on MTB purchasing.
I'd like a FS bike in trail category (~140-150 mm or 5-6" travel for a 26" wheels), but could settle for a XC (with 120 mm or 4" travel).
I'm only 135 pounds and 5'6" but I play quite hard.
I live at the end of the world with limited choices locally, what I have found already is a new 2012 Scott Spark 70 in medium and a used Specialized Camber 29er in medium (which are almost to big for me, I'd rather have a frame in 17" max). For the same price I could import a used bike from the UK in the price range of 700-800 GBP (1300 $US). That could be e.g. a 2009 Specialized Pitch Pro or a 2010 Kona Dawg Deluxe (which comes in 17" frame size). Buying an unseen used bike from a different country does make me quite nervous though.

Now the question: can the Spark 70 take the beating of being used on everything from XC to AM by a light weight rider? I think the brakes should be OK, shifting I can upgrade if needed, I'm confident at wheel building so I can upgrade those parts if needed and same goes for drive-train but I'm nervous for the fork, frame and rear suspension.

And a bonus question: Would the development from 2009 to 2012 in suspension and frame building technology justify settling for a cheaper new bike rather than a better spec'd used bike in this price range (1300$ us)?

(BTW, what I call "locally" is 250 miles from here so I'm not going to test-ride any bike unless I'm quite sure I'm going to buy it)

Ok folks, help me out here. I'm usually over in c&v, but thought you'd have the knowledge here. I'm looking at a few options:

1) 1994 Specialized Stumpjumper in near mint condition. Deore LX components -$375
2) 1996-7? Cannondale F700(volvo) in very nice shape, has iffy STX-RC front derailer. -$375
3) 2005 Marin Nail Trail like new. Deore/LX and Hayes hydraulic discs. -$375
4) 1991 Marin Bolihas Ridge. Nice shape, lower end Suntour components. -$75

Both the Stumpjumper and Bolihas Ridge are rigid, the other two are hard tails. I've never done any mountain biking at all, and I plan to ride all winter on whichever bike I choose. Here in MN that means temps anywhere from 35 above to twenty below zero.(fahrenheit)

Any thoughts on these bikes?

Thanks!

I would vote nail trail, it sounds like it has good components and the disc brakes should be very nice when it gets sloppy outside.

I'm kind of leaning in that direction, although I don't really need suspension. The Marin is $350, not 375.

I take it the fork on the Marin is entry level? Odd since the Nail Trail was pretty high up in the hierarchy in 2005. Then again, I know nothing.

I've got 4 brand new 1.25 / 1.5 tubes still in boxes (2 panaracer and 2 specialized) but I want to purchase two 1.75 tyres.
Is it a big NO NO to run these tubes in the 1.75 tyres? Have any of you had any bad experiences by doing this? This bike will be used only on roads and very light trails.

You should be fine. Not that much of a size difference and you won't be taxing them that much.

Thanks for the info. I've got quite a collection of new and old tubes that size here and I just didn't want to waste them. Since it'll be on my wife's bike I just wanted to check it'd be ok.

Boy those are really closely spec'd. I'd say it will come down to which one fits you the best and 'feels' more right to you. I'm not that familiar with Orange's extended line outside the gravity spectrum but know that they have quality gravity hardware. I would tend toward the Felt as they are a more known quantity to me and I have a lot of respect for the brand.

Hi I am new here and new to mountain biking. Can someone please identify this bike and maybe an estimate for it? It is listed as a Trek SLR3 but I could not find any info on that model. Thank you in advance.
