Agreed. I walked into a bike shop about a month ago. Still wasn't exactly sure on what I was going to buy just yet. My choices were limited because of my restricted budget. However, after test riding a few models, I was suprised how good the 2004 Trek Fuel felt. I didn't even have Trek on my mind. I didn't buy it because of popularity. I bought it because it actually felt like a good ride for me .
I have taken it out a few times and i must say that I am happy with my purchase.
So my advice to you is to test ride several models and buy the one that feels best for you . :D

You talking from experience or what people say. Gary fisher, in their category, make some good bikes. I don't like them (or even the new dh bikes) but I don't do much xc. If I did, GF might have something to offer :)

I don't think I based my purchase of my GF on knowing that it was a popular bike. In fact, I haven't seen it being riden by anyone else on the trail's. (could be because its entry level) Now I don't know if that comment was suppose to be defaming or not so I'm not going to take it that way. My only point was, trek (which owns GF) seems to be a bike that many people ride. So we shouldn't let our opinions of popularity drive our decision making, just ride what feels good. If it feels good, then do it.

I'm also in the market for a Cove. I wouldn't say those are too popular but boy are they sweet looking.

Everyone has different bikes in different price ranges. Comparing the two makes no sense at all.

Someone's $500 Specialized HardRock, doesn't really compare to someone else's Titanium Litespeed at $5,000.00.


Me, I've got a bunch of bikes.

The least expensive (but still very fun to ride) is my $35 Nashbar frame I built up as a singlespeed with old parts.

I've got a K2 Brass Monkey frame, that was given/bartered to me for exchange of some work I did for a friend and a little extra cash. I'm hoping to get it built soon! Probably worth about $250 for the frame, built should be worth $800-$1,000 depending on what fork/wheels/drivetrain I throw on it!

Then comes my Iron Horse Sinister Hardtail. Again, built up from mostly spare parts. I invested about $1,000 into it. May swap some parts onto the K2.

Then my Specialized SX, lots of XTR, top shelf parts, Marz Shiver forks...about $3,500 to $4,000 worth of stuff on it.

Lastly my Intense frame that I cracked and I'm awaiting a warranty/crash replacement frame. The frame alone has an MSRP of over $2,000.00

I haven't even mentioned my CX bike and my road bikes.

It's hard to distinguish quality based on brand names. For example, I have a Schwinn hardtail, and most would think Schwinn = department store bike, until I add the model name "Homegrown". Geometries, country of origin, componenets vary like crazy within the same brand. Many bike frames are probably rebadged and come from the same manufacturer.

For the record, I ride a Gary Fisher Cake 2DLX. I love it - perfect for my riding style. But my firend who has a Gary Fisher Sugar doesn't like his bike as much as I like mine. Bottom line - can't judge a bike based on the name on the frame.

My comment was more directed to what I thought you were implying about Trek being along the same lines as Huffy. I realize that Treks are *the* major brand of "real" bikes sold (as opposed to a Huffy which I don't consider as real). I'm not intending to be defaming towards you, just that comparing a Trek to a Huffy isn't, IMO a valid comparison.

I just get a little tired of people bashing Trek because they have such a huge market share (which is how I took your comment). BTW, I have ridden GF's in the past (borrowed friends, not my own) and have been fairly impressed, for the most part.

No I wouldn't say trek and huffy are on the same levels at all. I was just saying that their popularity levels are pretty on par, most people know a huffy and most people know a trek. Personally, if I was in the market for a road bike I would def. go ride a trek first. They make an excellent bike and I'm sure not bashing them for that. I'm sure lots of companys would like the exposure that trek has, just trek got there first and is reaping in the benefits and theres nothing wrong with that. :)

That's cool; sorry I misunderstood your point initially. :o BTW, I bought my wife a Bianchi Veloce and she loves it! It's way too small for me to ride. :(

What happened to your intense? I was looking at getting one of those until I saw some reliability issues and went with my Yeti instead.

04 Devinci Guzzler.I got it because it was made in Canada not China/Taiwan,not a big name brand that I will see a lot of, the component package was awesome for the $ and most of all its what fit me,was in my budget,and will hold up to my weight. the shop I got it from sells Fuji and Ellsworth and Devinci in Mt. bikes. I have nothing against Trek,Gary Fisher,Specialised or any of the other popular in my area bikes. it was a toss up between the Giant V2 or the one I got. the frame point of handcrafting is what made me decide on Devinci.
