You shouldn't go based on popularity. You should go based on what feels good to you. If everyone based their purchase on popularity, then hell we'd all be riding huffy's and treks.

I ride a MongoosePro DH, yay common X-mart bikes. I also have an Avanti and used to have a Specialized Bighit.

I have a Raliegh SC40 For paved trails and a Specialized Hardrock Pro for off road. They're both great!!!

1987 Schwinn Le Tour , cost a little over $100 for the bike including updating derailleurs, saddle and paint job. If you don't mind older design aesthetics, reconditioning an old bike can result in a quality ride and be quite a conversation piece. I got it decked out like a "poor man's Atlantis" and it rides like a dream!
