Bikedued- Do those 'SPD Road' pedals use regular MTB cleats ie. SH-51 ?

Never heard SH-51 before. But yeah, they use standard Shimano SPD mtb cleats. So, if you have spinning shoes or mtb shoes, you can walk around without having your toes in the air, or slipping and sliding if you walk onto a tile floor.,,,,BD

Clipless(with straps) has always worked fine for me on a mtb.
I doubt I'd like just platforms either. Don't want to slip off the pedals either.
You can still dab when you need to. Just take a day or two to learn how to use the clipless pedals and adjust them properly. Then, putting a foot down will be almost as automatic as using flat pedals. You wont ever think about it and will recall this period of uncertainty with amusement.

Actually SPD-SL pedals use completely different cleats than the MTB versions.

Shimano SH-11 SPD-SL Road Cleats

Shimano SH-51 SPD MTB Cleats

EDIT: But the Shimano Clipless SPD A520 Pedals shown below definitely use SH-51 or SH-56 cleats because the are SPD and not SPD-SL even thought they are designed as road pedals.... Cool pedal!

Yeah, but look at the picture Bikedued posted:

That's no normal SPD-SL. Those pedals look like Keos. This one looks like a mountain SPD with a weird little road platform round it to me.

Never seen them before but found them for $50.00 at Performance

Shimano Clipless SPD A520 Pedals

Interestingly, they are advertised as having a "Double sided design (that) works with cleated or standard shoes", and even though several of the reviews start off "Why is this pedal in the MTB section.", most are very positive.

Gonna have to try these out on my Fixed Gear..... Thanks Bikedued! .....and you too Zephyr11.

The one posted above is a different pedal though. The dual sided one that looks similar to it is also available, but doesn't look as clean. The ones in the pic are the one I was talking about, and they are 100% one sided. There is also this one...,,,,BD

These are the A530's which are double sided. I would not want to ride with that small of a contact point without being clipped in. It looks painful. The 520 is posted above.

This is the backside of the A520's.

Maybe your the one who is "odd". Mountain bike shorts marketed by FOX and others ARE baggy. BTW, if you're on the East Coast, hope your helmet has a visor or you're wearing glasses. Hate to hear you vision was damaged by a low limb.

Odd, or just a roadie!

Larry, lycra rips pretty easily. Mountain bike shorts are usually made of more durable fabric.

Oh crap! Lycra, clipless pedals, no eyewear! I'm gonna' die!

Guess the seat dropper and the helmet visor saved the day.

Hey, ride what ya want, dress like ya want, make your own risk assessment for protective gear. Your choice.

Many of you know why I'm on the protective eyewear bandwagon. Still, your choice, man.

Have fun!

not to be a discussion killer, discussion is fun and occasionally someone takes something useful away from it all, but it comes down to this:

we are riding bikes, not saving lives or doing anything actually worthwhile or important. there is no right or wrong way. whatever works for you works. it all comes down to style points. i think people mountainbiking in lycra look dorky. people think i look dorky (because i actually do look dorky, no matter what i'm doing, i look dorky, it's just a science fact, i've accepted it and moved on), but after all is said and done, we are riding f@#king bicycles.

agreed. hell, to the non-biking public, we're all dorks, no matter what we wear. and we (at least i bet most of us on this forum) have the luxury of time and money to own a bicycle that we ride purely for pleasure. pretty freakin' sweet!

(i'm a hardcore baggy fan, but the road background hangs on. wifey requested i wear the tight stuff that day... i gotta say, when it's freakin' hot and humid out here, the stuff does keep me somewhat cooler than baggy stuff. long and pedaly xc-ish rides in the future will feature more lycra content, at least when it's high humidity season.)

scrub - you can look dorky in lycra all you want. those shaved guns with the deep v in them more than make up for it, and actually makes the lycra make sense.

I thought the comment at the beginning of thie thread about cheating air on the downhill using clipless was bogus. If I didn't have clipless - I'd never get air off the back wheel. But cheating? Cheating whom?

OTOH, who is anyone to tell you how you should enjoy your bicycle? Everyone just ride & have fun! But don't be surprised if you get poked at for doing with clipless pedals, what others can do without (unless what you're doing is easier without clipless pedals, in which case kudos to you!)

Clipless all the way!!! If my bike's going down, I'm going with it!!!

Seriously though, have a good ride, whether you ride with clips, clipless, flats, pedaless? whatever.

That was my comment, right? Um...I call it cheating because I know how to get the bike in the air the real way, but I'm not very good at it. So instead of encouraging me to learn to jump better, clipless pedals just encourage me to cheat the bike up into the air. It's like cheating on an exam...it might look okay from the outside if no one notices what you're doing, but you don't learn anything useful doing it and you're developing bad habits instead.

I don't care what you do. If it's more fun for you that way, awesome, you keep doing that! We all ride for different reasons and have fun doing different things.

I tried riding in spandex and found it too slippery. On some sections I like to stay in contact with the saddle. Spandex slips to much, I like something that helps me grip the saddle. I may be making dorky moves, but there have been a couple times when the nose of the saddle snags the spandex, maybe its the padding. Anyway, a denim or stronger material doesn't stretch and get snagged. Its a practical thing for me.

But the whole MTB mentality is ride and let ride, the sun comes up in a few hours and I need to get moving.

Bikes: Bike list is not a resume. Nobody cares.

Shucks, I wear my baggy DH shorts on indoor trainer rides. Inverse dorky.

Haha, so do I. If it's a short trainer ride, sometimes I wear running shorts too. None of that on the mountain bike though...they get caught on the saddle and then not only am I dorky but I'm also mooning the person behind me.
