^ Exactly. People come in all sorts and in all levels of considerate and friendly all the way to self-centered d-bag. Just slow down, be nice, and be at Least as considerate to them as they are of you.

Yeah...9 times out of 10, if I'm running on a trail and someone is on a bike, I'll give them space. But if someone gives me attitude, if I come across them again, I'm much more likely to take advantage of the fact that I have the right of way. If you encounter ten pedestrians and one of them is a jerk, brush it off and don't let it ruin your day because it's not worth it. On the other hand, if you encounter ten pedestrians and all ten of them are jerks worthy of being referred to as "damn peds," chances are you're the jerk. Smile, wave, give them a friendly greeting, and I would bet that the number of jerks you meet will decrease significantly. There'll still be some jerks, but most people are more apt to be friendly to you if you're friendly to them.

I often encounter hikers on the local singletrack trails near where I live, so I'm a bit careful about downhill speed where visibility isn't good. Many of them will step off the trail, but I never expect them to do that as a matter of course. Hikers don't bother me (I'm often a hiker myself), but horses are another matter. Most horses that you meet on the trail have been pretty well trained, but a couple I've encountered have freaked out (even after I've stopped) and nearly thrown their riders. I always stop and ask if it's OK to proceed when meeting a rider on horseback.
