Well, my dad had my bike (a Trek 4300) on the back of the Honda when he backed into a really high curb. Sadly, he bent both of the rims on the bike. He claims it wasn't his fault (well whose was it then?), but finally agreed to buy me new rims.



What I need to know is what rims I should replace them with. The bike came with WTB Dual Duty XC 26" Rims (which sell for about $45 each). I would like to know if I should replace them with the same rims, or with some others. Does anyone have any recommendations on some nice rims in the $50 or less range that are better than or comparable to the WTB Dual Duty XC's?

I'd have to agree that you're better off buying a whole new wheelset simply because if you don't, you'll have to buy the rims and spokes and then pay someone probably $30-40 per wheel to build them. At $100 those rhynolite/LX wheels are a killer deal.

those are a good deal indeed. If you want to go the custom handbuilt route which is perfectly okay, handbuild wheels will last a long time. Then i suggest Sun or Velocity rims. I think mavic is way overpriced, sure they are generally pretty round from the factory but nobody will notice if their wheel is 1mm out of true on one side. Sun rims are an awsome bang for buck, particularly Rhyno Lites which seem to be popular here. Velocity is not so well known but i would say equally good. Their rims are set at friendly prices, and they are at high quality. Their Deep V is super strong. I got my Sun rims for 30 on ebay. And you will also have to replace spokes keep in mind

Sun rims will last you a good long time. Velocity is an Aussie brand, I think. Support our economy, ok?

Lol well theres a way of looking at it. I think both are on par with mavic.

I've got nothing against Mavic, as I've owned several sets of their hoops, and still have some, but I certainly think they're over-priced, if not over-rated. Depends on your riding. I like to abuse my gear, and I don't like wheel truing. Rhynolites hold up to an incredible amount of abuse. Fos skinnier XC, I'd stick with my Mavics, but for any tire over 2", I like Sun rims.

Oh, to get back on topic, check www.wheelworld.com, they seem to have some good deals too. I think I even got some Mavic wheels from them.

I think sun and velocity are equal to mavic in all aspects except price. Well my last sun rims were not as round as some mavics. BUt it is not noticable.

Did you just buy hoops, or built wheels? Build quality is very important too. A few wrong twists of a spoke wrench, and you can have brand new out-of-round wheels, regardless of manufacturer.

just the rim. I have nver bought a premade wheelset. I asked my lbs about it and they confirmed it is a defect in the rim itself

no, i got a set of Sun 0 degree lites on ebay for 30 bucks. It isnt that bad, all it means is that on one side it has a bump which probably throws it out of being radially true by 1-1.5mm. Not noticable.

If you're running discs, that shouldn't be a worry.

Im not running discs. It is laterally true within 1mm so i dont notice it.
