Re-building my Vintage MTB. Step 1- Buying correct sealed Headset.
Ok. So, my old Rockhopper is getting a rebuild.
Have purchased about 1/2 of the 'newer' parts that will be going back on it.
-Had old Altus C10 group. And am doing a mix of XT and XTR as replacements.
- New BB, FD, RD, cables, etc.
Bike is stripped, and cleaning process begun.
I live in Phoenix during my off season (Jan-March), and this bike sees a lot of sandy trail riding.
Want to upgrade to a sealed cartridge headset.
*Crappy pic shows my current set-up disassembled.
1- What and where do I measure? (ID of the frame, OD of the cups??)... I do know its a 1" steerer.
Did some searching and there is a dizzying array of choices. I'm absolutely lost.
2- If anyone has done this to one of their older MTB's, I'm interested in your recommendations.
Thanks.

You need a 1" threaded headset. The headtube should measure 30.1mm internally. This is a nice version that would match your XT/XTR components.

Nice! I saw that one.
Found a Classic 100 in black for $86 on Amazon (Niagara Cycle), so got it ordered.
The swap is pretty straightforward, correct?
I'm keeping (for now), the original quill stem and bars.
No interference with those?

With a proper headset press, it's a breeze to install. With a homemade headset press, it's still pretty easy. If you don't have either, bring it to a shop. For something so nice, it's not worth hammering it in. You should replace the crown race too. It's the angular piece attached to the fork.
Your stem and bar will be fine.

Good idea. I'm a decent home mechanic, and purchase the correct tools as each project dictates. Saw a couple good homemade presses, so will probably give that a go first.
Crown race? Is that a part that will be coming with my new Cane Creek Classic headset?
(this is my 1st headset replacement).

Yes. It's the angled race around the base of the steerer that the lower bearings sit upon. You'll need to remove the old one (with a crown race remover or a flathead screwdriver and a gentle hammer) and install the new one (with a crown race installer or an appropriately sized piece of ABS pipe).
