New to Mountain Biking
Well I used to ride Bmx and race motocross so I'm pretty familiar with 2 wheeled sports but I'm new to mountain biking. My brother recently bought me a used mountain bike for my birthday so I'm really just interested in seeing what caliber of bike I'm working with and what modifications i should be looking to make to maximize my riding potential. He paid 200 for the bike so I'd love to see what some of you more experienced riders know about my set up.

I think that is a solid setup for $200. Looks like a late 1990's setup. I like the XT and LX components. Mavic is always a good choice. I would ride the heck out of it. If the frame and fork are solid, then trash that sucker. But it may trash you dude.
Warning, don't drop any cash on upgrades. That frame is solid, but in a time warp. Once you get your MTB legs under you, try out some newer stuff. MTBikes have made some good changes. You will enjoy the journey you are getting on.

Not many original components on that bike.
Frame is decent, but agree that it's not worth sinking money into except for tires/tubes. Ride it hard and have fun!

i agree w/ everybody else, don't put any money into upgrading it. It's a great bike to see if you like MTB enough to buy a more expensive bike.

Well I had to throw a little money at it today because I broke the chain and 3 teeth off the 2nd gear front sprocket. So I paid for a new cassette and chain, along with a new seat and flat pedals because the seat I had was uncomfortable as sh** and the pedals on it had no grip so i get it back friday and im heading out saturday to do my best to break it again lol. Thanks for the input guys!
