Stupid question: what's everyone gearing up for on Saturday?

noteon 06-18-08 08:14 AM

Not a stupid question--we just happen to have had the conversation off the boards.

Ride to Montauk

Maybe a cobbler?

jyossarian 06-18-08 09:42 AM

There's a place semi-near you. Check out Bike Works on Rivington in the LES. I got some Proofide from them when I got my Brooks. Give them a call first though.

Urbanis, some of us are doing Glen's ride to Montauk on Saturday.

Urbanis 06-18-08 10:11 AM

Noteon, did you really have to do that? You just made me sign up for a 66-mile ride to the end of Long Island! :)

A fool and his money... sigh...

I signed up for the ride. I'm going to try the 66-mile route. I'd like to try it on my new Downtube Mini folder (16" wheels) but I'm thinking it might be smarter to use my Downtube 8H (20" wheels). Any thoughts from those of you who ride folders?

I returned from the Orient with the power to cloud men's minds...

It's a really fun ride, and if memory serves, the 66 doesn't include the one big hill.

So as long as we're talking about this stuff, who's still considering the 145? I'm waffling, but would probably bend to peer pressure.

jyossarian--they're not answering their phone, but I may stop by anyway. Do you know if they have the Brooks bags, too?

I forgot, it's Wednesday. They're closed on Wed. Don't think they have Brooks bags. If you've ever been to this place, you'd see they don't always have what you want, but somehow they always seem to have what you need. At least that's my experience.

I found a couple on the way home that have the Proofide, but no nice antique brown bags. I'll get the bags later. (Because black/velcro is just wrong once you buy a honey Brooks for your flame duotone road bike.)

jyossarian 06-18-08 01:38 PM

Look at Carradice bags. Made to work with Brooks saddles and a much wider array of choices. Waterproof too.

This one's kinda nice.

Hi there. I have two questions:

What's a proofide?

Are you riding tonight(Wednesday)?

I bought a new bike and was thinking of going for a ride on it.

I'm 95% going to do the 100 instead of the 145 though it pains me :( I haven't ridden really since the last Montauk ride - today was the first real ride I had (did a Manhattan loop and Central Park loop - 37 miles) but I don't want to do any damage and be out for the rest of the summer.

I'm just hoping I can finish that!

Urbanis - welcome aboard!

Hey Matty!! Check the last page about next week!

Proofide is the gunk you smear all over your new Brooks leather saddle during the break-in period.

The trains sucked today, so I just got home--and it's pouring here. I'm going to wait and see if it clears up, maybe go out after my kids go to bed. Maybe 9:00ish.

The evening's so screwed up, I'm going to have to keep it pretty loose, but I'll check in here...

jyossarian 06-18-08 05:37 PM

Matty, post pics of your new bike! What'd you get?

I bought a brandy new Trek 520 Touring bike. It is similar to a road bike but a little heavier and a more relaxed position. I wanted a bike that will accept wider tires and and racks/fenders.

Air 06-18-08 06:16 PM

Congrats!!!

Matty - are you riding this Saturday?

noteon 06-18-08 06:18 PM

I've wanted a 520 for a while. I got the 1000SL before I realized what I really want is a tourer, not a racer. Very cool.

jeebusaurousrex 06-18-08 06:27 PM

Ugh, just came from the studio in manhattan back home to brooklyn. Got caught in the downpour. Having no fenders (excuse my french) BLOWS CHUNKS.

Rode with henri last night at Prospect Park. His bike is faaaast, even if he claims the new cassette slows him down. Next time we'll hit it up for 10 solid laps!

noteon 06-18-08 06:35 PM

I think I'm out tonight. The rain may have stopped, but I'm beat.

Yeah, he told me he is slow, but I don't believe it for a minute! What kind of bike do you have Jeebus?
