Crossing the GW
Guys:
It is my understanding from you guys (and confirmed on the PA website) that the south side path of the GW is closed and all crossings must be done on the North side path.
How does one access the North side path, and where does it let you out?
Thanks in advance for the replies.

You go up and down 2 sets of stairs on each side. Take the street that goes under the overpass on our side of the gwb, make a left where the cars hop onto the gwb, the stairs are right there, you can't miss it. It leaves you literally on the other side of the southern exit.
I *might* take a ride up to piermont on saturday in addition to my faster sunday ride so I can show you, otherwise sunday we can show you.

Enter on West 179th Street between Cabrini and Fort Washington Avenues. You have to go through a series of staircases that go up, then down, and under one of the approaches, and then goes up to the North Path. Once you're on the other side of the bridge there's another set of staircases. Eventurally they drop you off on the same street as the southern path ( 505?), which runs under the Toll Plaza.

And don't do what I did and stop on the track on the stairs. It's a quicker descent but hurts more.

What time are you guys going out on Sunday?
I'm taking the same route as you guys (PP, Bridge, WS Highway, GW, River Rd., 9W) except I'll be turning off West before Piermont and heading to Spring Valley for a BBQ.

Those stairs are hilarious.
One Saturday I saw a line up of people looking up at them in fear as if they had to climb Everest. It's just a couple of flights of stairs. They have handrails and everything. Really.

Yup, they even have a track to roll your bike on in case you don't want to carry it.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the south side closure. I saw more than one person try to to get to the South side on Sunday.

Not that I recommend it, but I take this route and I can skip the entire set of stairs on the manhattan side. The only thing is you have to ride onto the road way, dodge cars from the on ramp, and climb over a 4ft high divider.

The PANYNJ website still says the south walkway wil reopen on June 2. I drove over the bridge today and there are piles of steel plates on the NJ side and hardly anyone working at around 2PM. I have a bad feeling it will be closed all summer again.

June 10 is the GWB Challenge. I would assume that the path will be open for that, but no guarentees that it will be open past that.
what a waste.

unless the gates are locked when they are supposed to be open, please use the stairs. I can't tell you how many times I see a person looking across the ramp coming up from the west side highway trying to gauge traffic to cross the roadway. i'm not saying don't do it, just only do it if you have to. (i've done that and also climbed the fence on the nj side when they forget to open things up oin the morning.
