In NYC... Trek Madone 4.5 or Madone 5.1?
Hey all,
I plan on purchasing a semi-professional bike in the next few months, and I was wondering whether I should get the Trek Madone 4.5 or Trek Madone 5.1. Which one should I get?
I live in New York City, so keep in mind that I'll be stopping and riding on asphalt. I'll be going to Long Island and back on some weekends, and on others I'll be going to the Bronx via the bike lane on the west side of Manhattan. I'll also be doing some long distance riding and hopefully some racing.
The Madone 4.5 is a TCT carbon bike while the Madone 5.1 is an OCLV carbon bike. I heard OCLV is much better than TCT, but is it worth the $800 to upgrade? Does anyone else have a Madone?
Thanks.

Professional Fuss-Budget
"Semi-pro?"
I wouldn't start out with a blingy expensive carbon bike, as it's going to take you awhile to really learn what is and is not important about a bike, what will really fit you well, what kind of ride you want etc. Hint: 80% of what they tell you is important, really isn't. Even if you're doing cat 5 or even cat 4 races.
FWIW I'd actually start with something cheap, comfortable and rugged. Jamis Satellite comes to mind, maybe Specialized Allez. Kit it out with tough tires (Gatorskins).

Heh. I started with a Satellite which is a great bike for riding around, upgraded to a Allez Elite, which is more performance oriented, and now I'm considering a close-out Madone.
I agree that if you're just starting out, a Madone might not be the best bike for city streets. If you've been ridiing road bike for awhile (and have to cash to spare) go for it.

Be sure you take a look at the 2007 5.0 or 5.2 Madones. I recently picked up a 07' 5.0 for a phenominal price. For the cash difference of the 2007 Madones to the 2008 Madones I would give the 07's a serious look.
Regarding the Carbon... I can't imagine there's any other difference to speak of other than weight. You won't feel a difference in the ride if that's what you're wondering. Have fun shopping.
btw... you'll probably get more response in the Road Bike forum.
