Wow, we grabbed our bikes and took Amtrak up from Martinez to Sacto yesterday, road out of the station east on ARBT, returned to Old Sacramento for afternoon margaritas on the water and a relaxing Amtrak ride home..with bar service. Beautiful day along the river and no wind, stopped for coffee and snacks at the CSU campus.
Such a great resource, and a reasonably economical trip. I'm a fan, Go Amtrak!

Did they have roll-on service? Like, as in they just hang your bike?
We took the train from Portland to Martinez and had to box our bikes. It was a pain, and then we discovered they had bike hangers installed and ready to go, but hadn't implemented use yet.
Anyway, sounds like fun!

Yup, Amtrak's Capitol Corridor trains (Oakland / SJ to Sacramento) all have bike hangers. It's very convenient, and you can also connect directly to Bart at Richmond.

Yup. It seemed like each car could handle 10-15 bikes on hooks, 5 walk-on cars per train - Capitol Corridor. We saw one other bike both coming and going, It may be a different story for the Zepher.

This year, Amtrak finally started taking unboxed bikes on the Zephyr (Emeryville to Chicago via Sacramento, Truckee, etc) as well as the Coast Starlight (Los Angeles - Seattle). Reservations seem to be required for bikes on these trains. Details here: https://www.amtrak.com/bring-your-bicycle-onboard
