Local place to donate bikes for Africa, etc.?
I have two cases (100 total) of decent utility-grade 1/8" bike chains that I found in SOMA.
The best suggestion of what to do with them came from the nice folks at Freewheel Cyclery which is to donate them to a non-profit for use in the developing world.
They weigh 27 Kg each so they will need to be picked up.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Overseas is cool but there is also lots of need closer to home. I'd re recommend donating them to the Crucible that offers great bike repair and even frame building classes for kids in need in Oakland. The kids build up the bike they will get to keep.

If you are still interested in sending the to Africa (Namibia) this place does that.

They have sent a shipping crate of bikes there and are still active. Not sure when their next shipment is. There may be a bikes for humanity closer to you. There is also the recyclery in San Rafael.
Like DG says, the Crucible does neat stuff with local kids. They are also having their Holiday art sale and open house this weekend. A good excuse to check the place out and drop off the chains.

Third-world charities can buy complete decent quality bicycles for about $30 from local manufacturers. If you want to support them, cash donations are a lot more effective. Cash is easier to transport and the local manufacturers provide jobs to the local population. World Bicycle Relief has been recognized as one of the world's top charities of any kind: https://www.worldbicyclerelief.org/
If you want to donate products, there are a number of great local charities that can use them more efficiently.
