My wife photographed this studly photographer/cyclist. I'm not sure if he's a pro cyclist, pro photographer or both. She seemed very taken with him, and even I can see why.

Yawn. We were at the start, hard to believe Livermore made any money back on that event. I suppose they argue there's an ongoing radiation effect that translates to intangible value for all businesses and residents...new math.

What a fun day!
I started in Livermore with an odd event. I was late and the team buses were not parked where they were in the last 2 years. So I saw a couple in a corner and asked for directions. The man turned and I realized I had seen this face before, it was Bob Roll who nicely sent me to the location the teams were arriving. Had a fun talk with a lady who was waiting for an autograph from Jens. Many women were actually and Jens graciously came out of the bus and obliged. This guy is genuinely fun. Then I saw TJ ushered into a Vietnamese restaurant where he had a photo shoot in team jersey and in yellow jersey.
I then drove to Morgan Territory, half a mile below the summit. Beautiful view of the rolling hills. Chatted with some photographers from New York (USCycling web magazine). The break was about 10 seconds ahead but a group with Jens Voigt was quickly getting back to them. The whole peloton scaled this tough climb like it was nothing.
My next goal was to ride up Diablo to the summit. I was late on my schedule, started from the school at 1:30 and slowly made my way up with my heavy camera backpack with hiking shoes dangling of the pack. Turn out I only used one of my 3 lenses, the lightest one. It was a bit hot on the climb. Stopping to chat with LanceOldStrong with his Dad and Daughter at Rock City made from a nice break in the shades. The bowl below the Junction was packed with vendor tents and tricky to ride through. The Junction was not as tense as I had expected, the action was higher on Summit Road. Saw Diablo's owner with his huge California flag. I almost stayed with him but kept going despite being quite tired. I finally parked the bike at the 3km to go mark where they had a stop sign and hiked to Devil's Elbow. They had organized a bike valet parking at the turn below the Elbow on the hiking trail. Hundred of bikes there, amazing site. I sat right inside the elbow, right at the edge of the pavement and stayed there until the groupetto passed. I mounted a wide-angle lens (18mm on full frame), the riders were zipping inches from my lens, it was fun. The ride down was more orderly that I was expecting with an occasional racer zipping by.

Mancebo was in the group of three and ahead of the chasing group with Tejay.
The girls from the UCDavis team were inviting some of the autobus riders to slap them on the derrieres as they went by! I haven't posted that video yet.

I was just outside of the 3 km mark, just after Camp Juniper, with uspspro and ruthness. We scoped out our spot Friday afternoon, and we were able to ride up to the summit. But on race day, we could only go to just after the 2 km mark, right by the Summit Trail. They had a bike valet, where you had to hike the rest of the way, should you choose to go up there. We had an excellent viewpoint of the climb before Camp Juniper, and then saw them as they passed us after Camp Juniper.

First time on the mountain, and had a great day. I settled in around 1:30pm, about 2.5k below the finish (near Capt. America), probably not far below Diablo Scott. Had a nice vantage point of several stretches of road below. It was fun to track the riders by the helicopter sweeping up the side of the mountain Also had a blast coming down the hill in the midst of all the post-race madness, until I got to the bottom and discovered a section of rubber on my tubular tire had delaminated from the casing.
Otherwise, a fantastic afternoon.

I think these podium girls had to put on fresh lipstick after every presentation... the cheek trophy seemed to be a requirement for the photo shots.
But I just noticed that the dark-haired woman has a tatoo on her wrist that looks like Arabic writing or maybe some other calligraphy... now I'm intrigued.

gpelpel those photos are awesome, just as good as anything I see from Graham Watson. The one of Chavanel on Diablo is especially good. Nice work!

I think these podium girls had to put on fresh lipstick after every presentation... the cheek trophy seemed to be a requirement for the photo shots.
But I just noticed that the dark-haired woman has a tatoo on her wrist that looks like Arabic writing or maybe some other calligraphy... now I'm intrigued.
