I always stand at least part of the way when...

I always stand at least part of the way when climbing hills of some length and find that standing and sitting alternately rests different muscles so I can keep going more easily.

Try a straightened metal coat hanger..... Not ideal, but an alternative approach is to use cable clamps and run housing all the way from the brake lever to the caliper.
