Sunday I'll be pairing up with Cap Hill bikes again - 35 miles, B-pace, 9am, usually to Bethesda, but there is a hilly and faster route that will go into Arlington. Last time we ended at Haines Point at 11:15am, just in time to see some other Pirates going round for Laps and Cheese

you ought to check all the comments on that site recommending the rotafix "method" the advocate is a graphic designer and is citing a track racer, ie. Track racers don't stop and they skip lockrings b/c they often switch cogs. In other words neither person has any idea what they are talking about. You can get your cog tight...until it comes loose. You can do that with what is called the finger method. Needlenose pliers won't do anything but scar the edges of your lockring. If they help you get the ring loose it was never done right.
I am being gruff but, I am really tired of having this discussion at the shop. Rotafix isn't a method. Your bike is not safe without a lockring. Threadloc's and loc-tite are not an adhesive. They just stop it from vibrating loose. If you are going to use the 1/2 assed method. Please use something decent like JB weld and keep your brakes.
Are you in DC?
I will show you how to do it properly. As can many of the people on this forum. But FGS, use a lockring.

no one's talking about using rotafix to secure their cog. fixed gear on the cheap means a lockring and at least one brake as far as i'm concerned.
rotafix is a method of tightening a cog (without a chainwhip) BEFORE the lockring is tightened using proper tools. period. i would never send someone out with a suicide setup.
with that in mind, lets build some fixed gears.

Hi
Howdy. Just introducing myself i'm andrew and been cycling for the past 4 or so years. Mostly mountain biking, i race downhill and dirt jump, but i shattered my index finger earlier this summer so haven't been on those since. Picked up a redline 9.2.5 as a fixie to commute and have some fun riding some road. Figured i would introduce myself to the DC locals, don't know if ill make it out for any rides because of work but just saying hi.
BTW, if anyone is in fairfax and needs their bike wrenched on bring it by hudson trail outfitters where i'm a wrench at.

Chuck Norris can set ants on fire with a magnifying glass. At night.
Chuck Norris doesn't play god. Playing is for children.
There are no races, only countries of people Chuck Norris has beaten to different shades of black and blue.
Chuck Norris does not own a stove, oven, or microwave , because revenge is a dish best served cold.
Chuck Norris can divide by zero.
Chuck Norris coasts on a fixie.

peter, joel, or really anyone
Can you swing by my place at 17th and t some time and check out my chainline? I'm getting some dubious drivetrain noise since switching my crankset and I would like to know if it's acceptable. This would be a great help and I buy the beer
