Too late! I just drove through Portland on Friday night/Saturday morning. If I were our first leg, I would have been running through you all, but alas...

I'll be there tonight! So if anyone is hanging late tonight or tomorrow night, I'm down. Just make it convenient for a bikeless vacationer with a sleeping baby at the hotel. Captain Ankenys was recommended to me, I may be there late tonight...

you can do it yourself.

or just start roasting your own, it's really just about as good - in fact, stumptown's one of the only roasters who can put out a product that even competes with good homeroast.

I'm going out to Ashland in October for sometime to attend UBI, but afterwards I am planning to move into the city and hold a job for awhile. Hopefully a long while.

Anyone been out to Ashland? Is it fun? Heard it was super small... but I like that (for awhile), so i'm down. Never been out to Oregon, and everyone tells me I will never want to leave. Hopefully they are right.

Ashland's small, very pretty... location of Southern Oregon University and a gigantic annual Shakespeare festival, which keep it from being too much of a redneck town. Never visited for more than a day or two at a time, but everyone I know who's lived there has loved it.

Portland is Portland. It's a good place. If you want to work up here after you finish UBI, though, you'd better start making phone calls as soon as you get to Ashland...

Ah sounds good. I am already talking to someone I know from Tallahassee that works at some climbing/bike store in Portland, so hopefully i'll get a job there. I'm definitely trying to keep on top of **** though. Don't want to get out there and have to squat like this other time I moved.

rent is cheeeeep. studio apartments run 450-600. rooms in houses can be had for under 300 easily.

you probably dont want to live downtown though.

If you haven't already, check out:

Been around for several years, pretty good coverage of the punk/hardcore/metal scene. Bit light on the indie rock, but you've got the Mercury for that. Hope this helps.

I'm sitting in Stumptown right now. Perhaps the best coffee I've ever had. And a sweet Raleigh track right on the other side of the window. Ahh, vacation...

is it white with one blue deep v and one black carbon aero rim? i know the guy that rides that, a mesenger here, and a funny ****ing dude. or was it red with some stripes and stuff? cuz that ones another messenger who's also a cat 3 track rider. there are usually nice bikes and messengers at stumptown. and good-ass coffee.

and jesse...i went to your hotel the other day since i didn't really know how else to get ahold of you, and they didn't have you in there or something. i dunno. and tonight i have to pack to move out. i wish we coulda met up, but damn. i hope you've had fun. i really want to visit philly, maybe we'll meet up there.

oh, and while i'm in the portland thread--anyone know anyone looking for a roommate? i'm moving out, but i'm just crashing on the couches of a friend or two till i work something out. god, it'll be nice to not live in almost-vancouver with people who don't like me.

seems like it's quieted down some, but i dunno. i know one guy with, what....three? i have two. finally put a brake on last night, and i still hate it, but at least i don't have to pay the ticket now.

they've also written a few for not keeping to the right/riding in the door zone. i mean bike lane.

WHOA! ticketing people riding to the left?! since when?
so if I'm riding down Salmon (a street with no bike lane) in the left lane, I could get a ticket?
what happened to Cyclist allowed full lane?

crap!

Isn't it that a cyclist can have a full line to the far right? Not left?

ORS 814.430(2)(C) Bicycles allowed full lane

here's some more to get specific:
814.430. (1) A person commits the offense of improper use of
lanes by a bicycle if the person is operating a bicycle on a
roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic using the
roadway at that time and place under the existing conditions and
the person does not ride as close as practicable to the right
curb or edge of the roadway.

i think this means that If you're riding at the speed of traffic (15, downtown) you're good to ride where ever.

(2) A person is not in violation of the offense under this
section if the person is not operating a bicycle as close as
practicable to the right curb or edge of the roadway under any of
the following circumstances:
(a) When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle that
is proceeding in the same direction.
(b) When preparing to execute a left turn.
(c) When reasonably necessary to avoid hazardous conditions
including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects (like glass or manhole covers), parked or
moving vehicles,
bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards
or other conditions that make continued operation along the right
curb or edge unsafe or to avoid unsafe operation in a lane on the
roadway that is too narrow for a bicycle and vehicle to travel
safely side by side.

my question though, is lane splitting legal?
