You'll be back.

Me and the wife are moving back there this spring/summer. We decided that everywhere else sucks.

Critical Mass Portland

Hey all,

I’m one of a couple coordinators for a group in Portland called the community independence project. We do different infrastructure campaigns in Portland - 2008 food program and schools program so far this year. www.myspace.com/pdxoregonized or email us at pdxoregonized@gmail.com.

But that’s not what I wanted to talk about at all. We wanted to start doing some more bike parade, critical mass / ass love that 2003, 2004 was giving us. Were tired of these bull**** rinky dinky 20 people masses, and want to go back to the 1000's strong masses aka the 10 year anniversary mass (I think in sept of 2003). We were thinking of calling the Jan 25th ride - the mother****ing wettest CM of the year or damn, this ride is going to be cold ride, or something like that. Next month, last friday is Feb 29th aka THE LEAP YEAR MASS!
Meet underneath the burnside bridge on the west side by naito parkway, 5:30pm meet, 6pm ride, Jan 25th and Feb 29th.

So if anyone is interested in portland, or wants some more info, or if im posting on the wrong forum give me a heads up.

toodles,
marko

how about if you want a big mass, don't invite the cops there. it's my understanding that that's what has played the decisive factor in why they're not big anymore.

zelah 01-07-08 08:58 AM

yeah police escort is a major factor in me not showing up after the first one i went to

u4444r 01-07-08 03:10 PM

We'll be handing out color slips. A different color for every 10 riders or so. Split everyone up to lose the cops and have a walkie talkie with each color. Reconverge and ride where ever we want afterwards.

But were up to any solutions folks have.

If people are interested, which some folks have been on other forums and venues, it might be cool to have a little forum / brainstorming session before the ride on jan 25th to talk about some of this stuff.

Last time, and the final time i was going to ride mass i accrued something like 450 or $500 worth of tickets. So i have no interest in repeating that but i miss the feeling you get when 100 or 1000 bikes ride together.

Good luck. Id love to see a more collective and overall bike event in Portland. Get the ball rolling and get it on bikeportland.org. Get it some good PR from the get go. If Im free I would def come to a CM revival.

Applied to post on bikeportland, waiting for moderator. If you know anyone, or yourself are willing to help at all we need folks to just get the word out thats it's happening. We'll post some of the fliers, stickers and stencils getting made, when they come out.

I'm definitely down for this if it works out. Good luck!

Kruger and Jarmer have left the PPB's Traffic Division. :) :) :)

Well, they get the 2 at the top replaced with tolerable ones, we'll either see them leashed, moved, or retired. I hope.

I went to that hearing thing about the 2 deaths. I spoke to some people who were deeply disturbed about the way they've been behaving. I've not been stopped by the B&B Circus, but they've sized me up at lights. They looked for my brakes. (morons couldn't tell the difference between a FG and a Nexus 8) Scuttlebutt is Sizer's husband is a full time bike commuter and she had no clue of the antics in the Traffic Division. She was shocked. I went to that rally with the Metal Cowboy and all and she was on the outskirts of the crowd in civvies with her hubby. She looked pretty poleaxed.

Sizer seems to be reasonably involved in the activist community; I have seen her at nearly ever rally I've been to since she was promoted. All the better (for us) if her husband is a commuter. What I really want to see, however, is some punishment for the cop who trampled me with a horse while I was attempting to leave a protest, or for the officer who shot pepperballs at someone who couldn't obey the police orders to get on to the sidewalk... because she was in a wheelchair and the police were blocking the ramp off the road...

Kruger and Jarmer getting placed somewhere they won't have so many interpersonal interactions is a step in the right direction, but the PPB has a long way to go. Hopefully their replacements are better.

Did you guys see these articles? I'm not turning into Pollyanna here, but I also know change like this can only happen one step at a time. This could be the next step.

I'm so sorry about what happened to you. I personally witnessed Kruger pepper spray that 18 month old in the stroller back in 2003 and his actual promotion pisses me off so very much. I don't think the police union is going to let any of those cops receive the justice they so richly deserve, though. If they can change their behavior in the present, I will be (mostly) satisfied.

I was too young to be politically conscious for that protest but as you can imagine I've heard all about it. That must have been tough to see.

I hadn't seen those articles, and I'm really glad some policy is changing. I know several people who have been hit around town (one by a cop car, although my friend was in the wrong), and the directive can only help. Unfortunately, it really depends on the cop. There are some excellent policemen in Portland; however their "accomplishments" (if you can call doing your job an accomplishment) are overshadowed by officers like the animals who beat James Chasse to death. Something tells me that if Chris Humphreys can disobey the general police directive on not beating people to death, he won't be the first to follow one about bike collisions.

Obviously my outlook on the whole situation is a little negative, but I can't complain with progress, however useful (or not) it may turn out to be.

hey, just to reiterate something i said on the main thread, my partner reda/humangirl and i are going to be in pdx starting on tuesday. we need people to hang out with and do stuff with and probably floors/couches to crash on. if you can help with the latter, we're endlessly grateful. if you can't, we still want to hang out, because most of the fun of being anywhere is the people.

donnamb 01-26-08 02:40 PM

zelah 01-26-08 02:43 PM

donnamb 01-26-08 03:46 PM

Friday's for industry people only. I'm going for 2 days, but that's just 'cause I'm a big nerd. :o Go on Saturday and then head over to the Lucky Lab afterwards.

It looks like they're looking for volunteers. Maybe a way to get in for free?
