I agree on getting the right frame to start. I want a light steel frame that I can upgrade components later on. My one issue is finding a track-like frame with braze-ons to add a rear-rack for commuting. The KHS Flight 100 looks sweet, but not too sure I can add a rack.

Any suggestions on new frames that would suit my requirements?

Cheers!
Kona Paddy Wagon has what you're looking for. If you can wait until the bike show in October, I'm sure existing stock will be marked down.

Are there many deals to be had @ the bike show? I don't mind waiting until then if the prices are good.

The trek store has the Gary Fisher Triton for $699 or $649, can't remember which.

Cheers!

Trek cyclocross frameset 2008 - XL
Nearly mint 2008 Trek XO1 cyclocross frameset (frame, fork, headset, seatclamp) 61.2cm top tube. Same frameset as the top level XO2 with a bontrager carbon fork and cane creek head set. Classy gun metal grey colour. Its just a little too big for me but would work for anyone over 6'3" or so. It has only a couple very small scratches on it. This would make a sweet race bike, or a nice ride for commuting and light touring.

I just saw this post about specially built paths on bridges in Vancouver for cyclists. Sure would be nice in Toronto.

What would be a fair offer/price for this bike:
https://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/bik/1344329709.html

I'm thinking it's steep for the bike but it looks like it could be a good frame for a conversion.

Cheers!

i would ride that as is, although they don't specify enough about the components to say for sure

how tall are you? i have a 58cm bianchi frameset you can have for real cheap if you want to do a conversion

I'm 5'10. I think the biggest I'd be is a 56cm, but I'm not sure.
Is $325 a fair price for that Miele?
How much would it cost to convert it to a fixed/ss (flip flop) set-up?
Cheers!

In terms of sizing, if you are of average proportions, I'm sure a 56 would fit you. I'm 5'9" with very short legs for someone of my height, and my 54cm Paddy Wagon (with sloping top tube) fits a bit snug, but great otherwise.

You're looking at a pretty expensive conversion if you purchase that bike. At the bare minimum you are going to need a new rear wheel, chain and (more than likely) chainring. The Miele you are looking at is using Biopace chainrings, which might cause issues with a fixed gear setup. Biopace chainrings are slightly egg-shaped to reduce strain on the knees at a certain point during the pedal rotation, and as a result of this, when tensioning your chain, it is more difficult to find a balance between tight enough to not fall off when you go over a bump and loose enough to not cause binding as the chainring rotates through it's full off-round shape. Keep in mind, however, the great Sheldon Brown rode a Biopace fixed gear, and he seemed to like it quite a bit.

If you want a cost breakdown, I would guess:

$100 for new flip/flop rear wheel
$20 for a cog + lockring
$10 for new freewheel
No idea how much new track chains cost, let's say $20?
$30 for a new chainring

If you had the conversion done at a bike shop, probably tack on an extra $60 for labour. If you did it yourself at the CBN, probably $20 in mechanics time + shop use time.

Coming to a grand total of... $200 or $230, depending on your choice of labour.

You could probably talk the owner of the Miele down to $300 without too much issue, and you could probably make some money back selling off the old components, but you're still looking at almost the cost of buying a new bike to do your conversion.

You can still snag some completed conversion deals for much less than that on craigslist, but you won't get nearly as nice a frame as that Miele.

I got that viner frame on ebay for $100. It is a repaint with the stickers under the clearcoat. Done by Frank Moak -Nathchez Ms. I was really impressed with the transaction - seller wanted to send UPS but I asked for USPS... He delt with customs and it came in a week.

Yeah for sure what is up in van? Give us multiple sentences op!

Waaaaaaay too much.

This road bike for $500 in Kitchener would fit you and it is a modern setup with Shimano 105 9-speed. Obviously it wouldn't be good for converting but it is only a few bucks more than that Miele but 20 times the bike...

There's also a Giant Bowery on the London Kijiji for a decent price but it might be too big for you.

Here's the interesting thing about Miele - they're totally unknown outside of the GTA / southern Ontario, regardless of component group. As an empirical example of this, I picked up a Campy Athena-equipped 7-speed Columbus SL tubed model from e-bay... for $80. The bike was located in PA, and if I remember correctly, had no other bids. I broke that frame, but you get the idea. Toronto is the worst possible market to seek a Miele in, if that's what you're after. Hell, Jet is right - for $300 or so, you can do *much* better.

Yeah, there was a red Miele on the Hamilton Kijijii a few days ago for $50, it might even be this one. It is pretty competitive in Toronto and for an hour's drive, you save hundreds of dollars.
