Ouch. I wonder if he is one of those guys who claimed "a car ran over my Aerospoke and it was fine" Yeah....it was fine until it splintered into several distinct pieces. Nothing is "bombproof" and regular inspection of parts that have been crashed or ridden hard for long period of time is a good idea.

As far as integrated h.s , I have seen a few frames that have developed damage of the frame bearing seats and a few with just plain bad construction of this critical area of the frame. With a regular headset the cups are pressed into the frame and this system has been a solid method for decades. With integrated you are using the actual frame as a bearing support and IMO (as well as others like Chris King) this is a flawed idea. Now with these bikes a toasted headset can easily screw up the frame where the good old pressed design would usually only result in the headset itself needing replacement. Having been wrenching as long as I have it was nice to see some kind of standard come into headsets with the advent of threadless. For many years you had so many different configurations...1", 1 1/4", 1 1/8" English thread...Italian thread...French thread...Swiss thread...25.4 crown....27.0 crown...and on and on. Finally the manufacturers seemed to finally agree upon 1 1/8 threadless as the industry standard but as so many other things in the bike industry "new and improved" has done away with that. On top of a flawed design, now they can't even agree upon one standard for integrated as Mike mentioned. Most of my bikes (my cross bike being the exception as I couldn't turn down the deal I got on it) have non-integrated headsets and have King's installed. All these bikes will never have a problem and will likely never need replacing. End rant.

did you get tix Dan?
Keith I totally agree with you, though I didn't know it was THAT bad. I knew Brad had his HT replaced I think to correct this, had to ah... um...dis-integrate?..

So in that vein... non-integrated HS bikes... choices?

If you want the full technical skinny check out Chris King's site....integrated headsets explained.

Almost all smaller builders use non. More $ tho. Marinoni Steel....around $700...pick yer colour and have it built to fit. Frame from Malcolm at Biseagal....prolly not that much more than a Marinoni....custom...long wait. Spicer has some decent Alu frames that are fairly low cost and non. Henry at La Bicicletta still has a handful of NOS Rossin's in alu and steel. Just about every NOS or used frame made previous to 2002.

P.S Nerdsgirth can you send em the minutes of my e.r stay? I'm still trying to rmemeber what happened before 3am accident night but I don't. It's really bugging me.

cavernmech 10-31-07 11:49 AM

I will have to bail on the sprints tonite....old friend is in town and must drink many beers with him. Wil...I will drop off that bag of swag for tonite at the store this aft.

Yup. I'm stone cold. Cold black heart and all that.

We don't have tickets yet. I'm thinking Mark/Keith have the right idea. Go to the forum after the game has started and shoot for cheap scalped tickets.

FYI: I had physio this morning and the therapist said he was amazed how fast I've gotten movement back in my shoulder. Most obvious difference between me and a lot of his other patients: Avid cyclist. Biking is a little like fate. It can cause you to be hospitalized in Germany, thereby cutting a two month-long trip short and then be the reason that rehab from said injury goes so well/quickly. Isn't it ironic? Don't you think? Oh and he told me that the sport with the most common broken collar bones is horse racing. He treated one jockey who had broken his collar bone 11 times!! He said the bone felt like a saw blade! Yikes!

Yeah, horses are like 6' tall bikes that can think (and act) for themselves! I'm not surprised.

TRaffic Jammer 10-31-07 11:58 AM

Done... now I've ruined my screen by looking at the ChrisKing site... I hope you are pleased with yourself
Best O luck with the scalper in MTL... not the best city to hope for cheaper game-on tix, but one must try regardless.
That's some good news from the therapist Dan. Bikin' for general health, constitution, and injury recovery. Do we recover faster simply because we want to be back on the bike instantly? Mind over matter?

NOS Rossin? oh my

Do you have a stable of these things? :-)

Also, luckily your bike isn't named Father John... that bikes comes with an early-childhood therapist (sorry God).

Going to bail on sprints also - going to see The Hour - special guest: Kenny vs. Spenny.

Re: MTL sooo yeah, race first, then try to snag some cheap tix. I can't wait! les glorieux!

Awesome race last night. I had a blast and enjoyed the course that took it out to the north. So funny climbing Mt. Pleasant with tom mosher following me (cause he had no idea where he was going) in an all pink outfit -very little piggy. Denis (eccentric courier) was back and forth as well, wearing a warewolf mask and tiedie.. funny reactions from pedests. Thanks for the pre race guidance Keith. I had no clue where the necropolis was... WESTSIDE! I have no hope in MTL :)

route:
trinity bellwoods, 94 cowan (toby's house), krumpler, goodfoot, adidas, toronto necropolis (riverdale), mt. p cemetery, casa loma, long bomb down to Manic coffee and back to trinity bellwoods rink. 6th of 15, not bad! nice to see you 2 wheels good!

Yeah I think i'm almost done healing, not up to full strength yet though. And I need some better painkillers than T3's (they don't do jack****). Hopefully i'll be up for next weeks sprints.
