cavernmech: sounds like a lemon to me. I've had my powerbook for 2.5 hassle-free years! *knock on wood*

iherald 06-26-07 07:21 AM

I've never had any real problems with any of my Macs. That said, I haven't really had any problems with my XP box at work (other than nothing makes sense and I have to do 8 steps to do something easy)

Yeah, they are, but Princeton Tec says "That is the best price around and will probably be changing soon." I wonder if I can get a raincheck. Otherwise I'll wait and hope they come to Hot August Nights.

If you talk to anyone who bought/used one this past weekend, try and find out how much they were selling for (and which system they were using.. 1/2/3).

Everyone was running the 2 set-ups. They had em at Cycle Solutions for $250...team members only. If they are sold out (I am gonna call em this aft) they will be getting more in. According to Johnny no-one recharged all weekend and no-one had a battery run out on them.

TRaffic Jammer 06-26-07 07:51 AM

Keith don;t fret too too much about the Imac man, with all the popularity I sure there are bound to be the occasional issues with a couple. I think you got some possible i/o issues connected to the USB chain. I can bring you another usb mouse if you'd like OR just take that puppy back for a replacement unit..... call ahead to make sure this can be done hassle free to save you blowing your, or someone else's, brains out at the store. I've got 40 of those bad boys out on the floor and not a single issue like yours in the bunch of 'em. I checked this morning and they are indeed running the default mouse KB setup as well. You may be being punished for not keeping up the the Kashmeri's...just a thought.

There have been quiet days and busy days.. toby brought in some sick old frames that are getting all shiny-and-new-ified.. and the reason you've seen 90% of the bikes around the city is that they're all supercycle 1800s! Not sure if you were there on the day where 4 guys all brought theirs in at the same time.

Unfortunately, I haven't been around much due to work and won't be all summer if I get the internship i went out for yesterday.. oh well, I'll look fwd to helping out again in Sept.

nerdsgirth: someone on your team turned in a 48-minute lap (in lap 8)? Nicely done! Your avg was 59:50, ours was 1:13:37. :P

I did a 1:03:07 and a 1:09:35 (including a couple minutes to strip off some layers and disconnect my light part way through).

cavernmech: looks like they actually subtracted your sleep time when you did a lap right after me. Someone else did our last lap, right? Who was that?

After an hour or so of tinkering and messing about with it all seemed fine. Of course 30 minutes after T.J. left the &%$*#$%* thing crashed on me AGAIN with the screen going completely blank. I either got a lemon, am absolutely terrible with anything computer like or just have bad luck. Back to the store with it today. Is it too much to ask that a brand new $2000 Mac operates the way it should?

Should have bought the iMac from me... I would have put a "no lemon" charm on it. ;)

Where did you buy it from?

So we run XP for shipping and game playing, OSX for everything else = virii free computing.

whatever you do, be sure to ditch that one button mouse with the grippy side buttons, as a former PC lifer person I have never been able to come to terms with mac mice and trying to use them deteriorates a bodies quality of life. I need 2-3 buttons and a wheel, sure it ain't as pretty but it works.

Make the imac work and you'll be better off for it, comparably it is hassle free computating, and prettier, quieter et al

Parallels works excellent for me. Of course, you need to keep downloading new versions, as they keep refining the software. Coherence mode is amazing! Plus Parallels utilizes my Boot Camp Windows partition.

You do need, however, at least 2GB of RAM, to run both OS'es comfortably.

YMMV

We got a nice deal and no interest for 6 months financing also. Carbon Computing....Mindy wanted to stay close to home....in retrospect prolly a good idea.

somnambulant 06-26-07 09:44 AM

I just realized that Ronin's sig gif has the NBC logo in the corner. I guess that must have been a blooper show as I doubt they were showing track racing. :)

cavernmech 06-26-07 09:59 AM

So Mindy took the I-mac back to the store and got a condescending "well it is used now" comment when she asked to return it. They will not replace it. They will do their "tests" and try to figure out the problem but other than that if we want them to take it back we have to pay 20% restock fee. I am officially PISSED!!
Ready to go all Bruce Banner on their asses!

operator 06-26-07 10:48 AM

Carbon computing? And they call themselves an authorized reseller? Apples RMA and warranty service is supposed to be very good - or so my friend says - he works at an RMA facility.

Yeah that is our ringer Adam Wade. He hadn't touched a mtbike this year until the race. He borrowed a bike because he doesn't own one! Massive roadie. Note the team uniform from two years ago. He came in 2nd in the first lap that year. He didn't get to Albion till lap 8 this year because of work. Good times!

years of working retail has taught me that you just have to keep on complaining. first talk to the top manager at the store and if that fails let me know if you would like help with a tersely written letter. never fails. no way should you be paying a restocking fee on something that didn't work in the first place.

Call 1800 My Apple and get an RMA number from them. If you walk into a store with apple already approving a return, you'll do better.

That said, ultimately, they'll likely try to fix it. And although it sucks, it's reasonable for them to do that.

It could be something as simple as a stick of ram not being seated perfectly. You never know. I assume Mindy left it with the service people there.

TRaffic Jammer 06-26-07 12:27 PM

guys I don't think this is reasonable at all..... if it's a ram issue they should have looked at it immediately!!!
This couple hasn't enjoyed their purchase. The box doesn't work, it's not we've been using it for a few weeks .... it flat out never has worked like it should. New box time...you figure this one out. If some sales rep told me I have to wait potentially upto a month while they out my warranty trying to figure out what's wrong with a box a that has NEVER worked correctly for ANY extended period of time..I'd lose my mind.

I agree that this is the best solution, but the problem is that it's not DOA [which according to Apple basically means that it doesn't turn on]. As such Apple won't give Carbon a new computer to replace the one they would give Keith, which would mean they would be stuck with a 'used' machine that they fixed. As such, since the warranty is merely that they will fix any problems, that's all they are likely to do.

It's not to say that we all wouldn't like Keith to have a new iMac; merely that I can understand why it might not happen.

TRaffic Jammer 06-26-07 12:54 PM

I totally get what your sayin' from a supply chain perspective, but as MACS get bigger in popularity and they make more and more of them, these issues are going to increase. If they want to take market share from WINDOWS, they need to stop acting like every piece of hardware could bankrupt the company or retailer. The customer is King, not the iMac.

The shareholder is king! As Gordon Gecko is famous for saying "greed is good".

But, I think we all agree that we hope Keith gets the issue resolved so there are two more satisfied mac users out there.

TRaffic Jammer 06-26-07 01:04 PM

 true enough... I just hope Keith isn't dangling someone six inches off the ground.

I think the best way to get results is to pull a Suge Knight. Grabbing Vanilla Ice by the ankles and hanging him over a balcony until he signed over all rights to Ice Ice Baby!

edit: man.. I was going to go for a spin later to stretch the old legs, but it's currently sitting at 34 with a 41 humidex.
