$500 gets you a marked-down Masi fg bike at Bikes on Wheels if I'm not mistaken (probably am). Components might be **** but who knows, could be a good deal. IRO is proably the only frameset option in your budget. Shops in the neighbourhood will have access to IRO, Surly, Soma, Cayne (Uno), Fuji, Bianchi, Kona, etc.
PS. Don't get the Urbanite, ask Somnambulant for reasons.

if i remember correctly the masi at bikes on wheels is going for 570. pretty similar components to the fuji track.
I got in contact with the owner of the track bike i linked to on craigslist and he sent some high res photos. says hes pretty firm about 600 and he also sent a photo of a small dent (about the size of a dime) in the top tube. Should i worried about this? im thinking at the very least its a good reason to get him to lower the price. I tried to upload the picture of the dent but it keeps on failing even though i've reduced the file size below 100kb. Any way it sounds like a good deal to me assuming the frame is the same quality as all the other entry level frames it has some really nice components and i looked up the mavic DA-2's and apparently there old but good.
btw cavit8, thanks for offering the wheel, i might take you up on it if all this craiglisting crap doesn't work out.

Urbanites I can't comment on, Cylcemania are generic import frames I believe. Last time I checked the wheels were formula hubs to alex rims, decent components everywhere else, been awhile since I checked out the track bikes there. $450 cash was the price I got (in October) w/out brake. Close to 500 with one installed. Most likely where I'll end up buying one if the money sitution is ever in my favour, which I doubt.
i'm riding an urbanite ss/track frame and it's fine. nothing fancy (4130 straight-gauge), but it's solid, the paint is durable and it has fender eyelets. for that price it's worth it.
thanks for the heads up, much appreciated.

i ride an urbanite as well. solid feel, rides smoothly, and stands up to abuse. the tradeoff is that it is heavy as a brick and not the snappiest ride. and err, you could find better deals.
wouldn't have bought it again if i knew any better. (shrug)

i've been scouring craigs list and i found this https://toronto.craigslist.org/bik/365655999.html which is sort of interesting. the no name frame sounds sketchy but its has sugino (75? i cant quite make it out) cranks and a miche rear hub which are nice. mavic MA2's are really cheap though right? i dont think its worth 600 but id like your guys opinions.

If you decide to go the new route a Cyclemania rig would be preferable to an Urbanite and come in way under price for the whole bike.

I think the Giant Bowery is below 600 before tax, somewhere in the $550.00 range, but I could be mistaken

BTW - brad, after you showed me your litespeed i have a theory on why they installed a shorter replacement head tube; i would guess that they measured your integrated headset without including the cups (ie treated it as a normal headtube). i don't know why i thought of that...
