And about being shot, I have lived in Philly on and off for four years collectively. DC is nothing.

well the ****ty week keeps getting ****tier... Ryan just called me and said he got hit by a car and went down pretty hard up at College and Elizabeth. Old lady in a mini van turning left as the light turned yellow. Corner of her car clipped him and pushed him up and off his bike across into the sidewalk. He's at the hospital getting his wrist checked out right now.
Bad karma out there now... so keep your eyes open and be extra safe folks...

I'm just going to put this out there, as the "bike without a rider" thing irks me.
What if we talked to Charlie's parents about donating his KHS to the FCV? I know the FCV crew use a lot of those bikes there and it seems like it something Charlie would enjoy/approve of. I think it's set up as a commuter right now but we could strip it down and turn in back into a straight-up track bike.
*shrugs* ... maybe something to bring up w/ his family at a later time.

I'd like to see his beloved Cyclops hung from the rafters of ForestHill Velodrome...did he ever get to ride it there?

We could see if they could be donated once things have settled down. I'd chip in to get a memorial logo painted on, "in memory of..."
Yeah, Mike I hear you...

I don't think James was with us when I was there with Dan/Charlie.. I can't remember for certain, but I think it was just the 3 of us. That's not to say Charlie wasn't there with James at some point..

We are devastated to tell all Charlie’s friends and biking companions that on Saturday 4th August 2007, outside Brooks, Alberta., my brother Charles was hit from behind by a vehicle that as far as we know swerved onto the hard shoulder. Charlie died instantly. Investigations and the accident reconstruction are ongoing and will be made known shortly by the RCMP.
Charlie had completed his southerly ride from Vancouver to San Diego and then started his second leg from Vancouver to Toronto, a ride of many thousands of kilometers.
Charlie equipped himself to work towards a greener planet and after completing his studies his plans were to continue his studies in France and later in Urban Planning at the Sorbonne and to dedicate his significant talents to a better world.
He would never waver from what he believed in and would always fight for his ideals, never passive when he expressed his thoughts and always intuitive. He fought always for these beliefs and spurred on his friends, and in fact everybody, to follow suit, never without enthusiasm, honesty and above all, passion.
Please please share your stories about your time on line or else where with this wonderful, enthusiastic and adventurous to manifest the joy that he brought to all who knew and rode with him. This can be done in the comment section here.
The funeral is to be held at St Paul’s Church, Bloor St. E. at Church St. at 2pm Tuesday August 14th.
The grief we share is the price we must all pay for the deep love we had for Charlie. His memory will endure.
His mother Caroline, father Val and his brother Thoby.

Thank you Andrew for your message. Charlie will have his funeral at St Pauls Church in Toronto on Tuesday next at 1400. Not much to know about the details of the accident. Several have alluded to an incapacitated driver but there is no solid news of that to my knowledge. Would appreciate knowing the truth in any case.
I am a long time colleague of Charlie's dad and watched Charlie grow up. Val and Caroling (parents) and my wife / myself were set for a nice holiday in the east of France. We were there when the news came in. Never had I seen anyone so unconsolable. A parent should never have to bury a child.
I would expect that the obit and news detailing the funeral arrangements are in the Toronto paper today but I will forward what I have to you in the morning.
My very best regards and appreciation for your contact.

Being a parent I can say that burying a child would be a living nightmare. I haven't done it but just the thought turns me to jello. I HAVE designed angrily around the thought he was hit by a drunk. If this turns out not to be the case..... cards will be reprinted at a late date.

Two things. Andrew save me one of the cards for when I get back. They look great!
And yes Charlie got to ride his Cyclops at the track. I was there and James was too taking pics. Offhoff was there too.

also, got this comment on the blog:
also, got this comment on the blog:
Charlie was one of the brightest guys any of us will ever meet. In this perfect, non-pretentious joyous yet still sarcastic way. basically a rare stroke of joy genius and humor in the world.
It is a waste. no words really work here.
That said, I would love to get in touch with everyone Charlie knew on bike forums and get some information out there: (in case people don’t already have it)
For starters:
1) A service for Charles will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 227 Bloor Street East (between Church and Jarvis) on Tuesday, August 14th at 2:00 p.m. The presence of anyone and everyone who wants to come and celebrate Charlie’s life would be appreciated.
2) There are plans for a critcal mass-type of ride for all of Charlie’s friends and family and others who knew him. Even those who didn’t and want to celebate him anyway (there is a lot to celebrate) are deeply encouraged to come and help us take over the streets in his honour. I think that he would really have loved this. More details (i.e. date and time) on this to be announced later.
3) Canice (or anyone else associated with bike forums), could you perhaps e-mail me (emma.j.m.brown @ gmail.com) and let me know if there is anyway better way to post this information to anyone who Charlie may have known via bike forums. I would love to get in touch with that part of his community but am sort of at a loss as to how to best go about it.
