I've still never been in Cavern, always sad to hear of a (judging by folks here) great, reputable store heading off - but obviously it was a decision made with great thought. Hope I can swing by soon to see what goodies you are flogging off.

PS. Video testing went OK, cam angle/positioning needs/needed tweaking so I didn't upload anything yet (it's too irritating to watch, and my late night east->west run isn't very exciting). Remarkably well lit on the Bloor and Queen stretches, down the dark spots of Shaw and Ossington you can't see much though. Will have a couple uploaded tomorrow, hopefully I can tweak the angle/positioning well enough blindly (hard to 'preview' where the lens is looking, but I'll get it - also came with a handlebar mount which I might try soon too).

I am not sure whether the shop will be sold or if I will just be liquidating and closing it down...the more likely scenario. So for the time being I am going to have a big ass liquidation sale. Pretty much everything in the shop is fair game (except my rigs) and no reasonable offer will be turned down. I would make up a list but obviously there is wayyy too much stuff to do that. I will still be here for a few months yet but I want to thank everyone here who has supported the shop....you all rock! K.
P.s. for all the mechanics out there most of my tools will also be available....just not till the bitter end.

I'm sorry to hear about the shop, Keith, but I'm sure you'll move on to something else that will make you very happy. From my limited interaction with you I'd say that you're a solid dude and I believe good things come to good people, even if it takes a while sometimes. Best of luck.

It's funny - in the last few months I've been kind of mulling over the idea of opening up a small shop and it's not totally off the table but I've made the mistake of taking things I truly love and turning them into jobs in the past - definitely has the potential to suck at least some of the joy out of the things one enjoys as a hobby. Not to mention the fact that, at this point I'd be fairly unqualified. ;)

jeremywhitehorn 09-06-07 11:31 PM

ah keith say it ain't so! you'll find something more suitable to you i'm sure. if you ever want to trade jobs i'm cool with that - i'll run the shop and you can cook at a pretentious restaurant - sounds like a deal. seriously, i'm happy for you but sad to see another great shop dissapear. i will deffinately be in to make you some offers you can't refuse. or can, depending on how unreasonable they are...

The last suggestion might be somewhat more up your alley. If you guys need access to a stand and what not I can open up bikechain after 6 on weekdays.

Where there is a will there is a way... Will wasn't around but I got 'er done anyway.

PS I'm aware that was a really ****ing horribly awful joke. I blame my father.

I'm assuming you mean tomorrow? If so then yes! I'm going early to line up for tickets for "Control" a film about the late Ian Curtis of Joy Division. After that brunch would be awesome. By the way sorry I didn't call you yesterday man... I was in Mississauga and just plain forgot.

If you thought wrenching other people's bikes was boring, chicken sexer, wow... I did that for a summer and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Good for you for making the jump though, lots of people live the life of quiet desperation doing something that they should have left long ago. I get pretty stir crazy myself, my last career lasted 11 years which is the longest I've done anything. I'm going into my second year of grad school and I'm already thinking about changing that career before I even start.... If you have any 1" Chris King threaded headsets about, I'm your man.

Hey Keith.... sorry to her that you're moving on... and just after I found out that Cavern was yours as well! Well at any rate, gl, and enjoy the next thing that you get hooked up with. :D

i watched life aquatic a few days ago and the quote was stuck in my head.

dan: brunch! yes!

mattrennick: i saw you yesterday at queen&bathurst and would've waived but i was too busy getting right hooked by some ******.

and yesterday i was riding on harbord when a guy in a delivery van that was stopped at a light on the intersecting sidestreet decided to run his red right before i passed in front of him, cutting me off. it wouldn't have been that bad except that i was holding another bike while riding(maybe not such a good idea). i just thought it was weird, he was at a complete stop and just didn't feel like waiting it out? weird.

new beirut is good.

To sound completely redundant - building new bikes out of the box is so much more fun than repairing someone else's bike.

a) it's clean
b) not having to deal with customers since i'm not sales staff
c) marveling at the quality of some stuff that comes out of the box

Funny enough, I get much more satisfaction fixing others peoples bikes for free at bikechain than when i'm getting paid.

If you didn't already you may want to get the seat tube reamed or flex honed. This will remove the corrosion on the inside and make it far less likely it will get stuck in the future. You were bummed about the old post getting stuck? Imagine how extra bummed you would be if the Thomson got stuck. I also suggest liberal amounts of grease or anti-seize.

iherald 09-07-07 06:35 AM

Keith, are you still going to be importing bike stuff (Iro?) or do you think you're getting out of the business all together?

Well if someone came along that wanted to buy the shop I would prolly stay involved to a small degree helping them run it. Barring that I think I will be getting out all together. As Mike mentioned the possibility of staying in the industry in a distribution capacity hasn't been completely ruled out. One way or the other it will be the end of the year before everything is said and done. I have an opportunity to get into elevator repair and maintenence....so be careful when going up and down ;)
Also I have 3 or 4 cruiser style bikes that I really need to get rid of...so if anyone needs one for a friend or partner let me know. 2 of em even have Nexus hubs on em. CHEAP!!

Probably a good idea - I did clean it as well as I could and put buttloads of grease in there but getting it reamed is something I should probably do! Is it something that can be done fairly quickly? Say... On the spot if I have an appt. of sorts? ;)

Flex honing is a quick and easy operation. I could do it for you if you give me a heads up when you are going to stop by. If it is really bad (which by the sounds of it isnt) reaming is a longer more involved task.

Details? C.T.'s basically sold out of cruisers right now, so I can send people your way. Let me know brand/sizes/etc. and I'll try to get some bodies through your door.

Note to self: do Iceland in warmer months:

Aww man, I'm happy to hear you're going to ditch if it's not pleasing you anymore, but I hope your not opposed to your friends, vendors etc throwing a big ass party for you & Mindy if you've committed to moving on. It won't be the same without you no matter who buys it or if it's gone!

Retail is a *****, an unappreciative, working you too hard *****, whenever we consider it we think of how hard our friends are working, or to the occasional incident of crackheads in your shop, or getting jacked by suppliers who don't actually know when your loot will ship, making you look bad to customers, or any number of the stories I hear from you guys. If you don't love her anymore I'm glad you're leaving her.
