and TBN, Eugene Yao, the founder of Urbane Cyclist, who graciously
hosted and led the informative Pre-Season Bike Prep Education Nights for
the past seven years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
"Eugene Yao Urbane Cyclist Bicycle Design Award" created in honour of
Eugene, to support excellence and vision in bicycle design. Cheques
payable to the Ontario College of Art and Design with a notation about
the award. Eugene's family invites friends to a celebration of his life

i dont know how i feel about the cheques being made payable to ocad.

really not a fan of the direction that school has gone in the past 5 years or so.

they just bought a new building for admin as well as teacher studio space.
students are super crammed and they are giving teachers space to work?

I'm not a huge fan of the new OCAD building, but I'm of the opinion that it's at least something different.

That's sad about Eugene. I'm rarely in Urbane and didn't realize he wasn't well. It sounds like a nice way to make donations and with a named gift, moneys towards it would be used there rather than in any unrestricted way by OCAD.

And I called Mayfair plating regarding chrome work. They'd need to quote on individual items after having a look at them and there's no advantage to having a large batch of work done at once. I'll probably swing down on friday with some bits from the Picnica and let folks know what I've found out. I've heard from other sources that, say, a fork is about $30 but I don't know how long ago that was and if it was just the fork legs etc.

It just clicked that I often saw a fuji track parked in there, was that yours? Crazy about the store burning down, you guys always had the rarest stuff and the best prices. That DVD collection will be very hard to replicate....



And yes, Eugene was an affable guy, I always tried to talk to him before anyone else. He tried to talk me out of riding fixed without a brake ;)

I'd go with the oil impregnated bronze busings. If you ask nice for some "samples" you might get some for free (the usually deal with large orders)

No specs online, but I think I have a catalog at home, so I could give you a part number if you give me measurements.

Really, really awful about the store. The more I think about it, the worse it seems. I tend to go to the Markham St location, since it's more convenient for me, but the Queen store was my introduction to Suspect. Are the two stores owned by the same person? If so, that would like help financially at least. Obviously the worst part is all the irreplaceable things that I imagine were in there, but that sort of thing can hopefully be slowly built up again over time.

I've been lurking in this forum--and this thread, in particular--since Jan '06. I'm a bit shy and never introduced myself even though I have met a few of you who work/worked in bike shops (Rob, Keith, Mike). So, hi! The reason I finally post, is that I need some advice from fellow T.O. commuters. I need route advice for my commute in from Etobicoke. For the last year and a bit I have been commuting in from St. Clair and Bathurst. This last weekend I moved out to Brown's Line and Evans. Today was my first commute in. It took an hour and was a bit smoky at the end but was otherwise pretty good, except for the bit where the roads get squished alongside the Lake (the stretch from the Food Terminal to the west side of High Park). This morning I took the Queensway for that stretch, which was not ideal b/c of the high speeds and lack of a shoulder--there is an on-ramp to the Gardiner. The other alternatives that I can identify are Lakeshore and the Waterfront Trail. Lakeshore seems to be just as busy as Queensway--is there any more room? Obviously, the Waterfront Trail would be ideal in non-winter conditions. My question is this--is the Waterfront Trail maintained in that stretch in winter? Has anyone ridden it recently? How do you do this stretch in winter conditions? Thanks!

The waterfront trail is not maintained in the winter, although it's usually clear enough to ride between major melts (i.e. probably not now)

Queensway sucks indeed, but your only other option is lakeshore, bloor or dundas unfortunately!

keith, sorry to hear that crap about mindy in this day and age.. chock up another restaurant for the black list. i've got a lot of old co-workers in the area who'll be more than glad to boycott.
just got back from class and read about the 6-alarm blaze (6 ALARM?!? holey moley).. then realized it was at queen/bathurst.. ARGHH SUSPECT. those businesses must have insurance, but i can't say the same for the renters above them. it might not be realistic, but everyone should get some kind of homeowners insurance for peace of mind. take it out of the peeler's budget.

"peeler's budget". hahahah. And yeah, insurance is pretty damn cheap, so it's definitely a good idea. Both for covering your own belongings, as well as liability insurance to cover your arse in case you wind up flooding/burning/etc the place!
