does anybody know what the courier 'scene' in Toronto is like right now? I'm 17 and thinking of working as a bike courier as a (full time) summer job from June-August (inclusive). Any suggestions?
btw, I have no experience as a courier, but would like to get some. Get a map, ride , ride , ride. Wear a helmet. |
Black Thorn Cider... soo good
what are the DRS rides? and can anyone show up? i wanna start riding with other people in the city and dont know where to start. |

If your in it for the summer totally be prepared to be shunned. Sorry but it's true. Lots of messengers ride all year to make their living and aren't all keen on going through a lean summer with more riders splitting the limited pool of work. I was likewise a solitary rider for a while. It's an earn your stripes kinda gig.

Wes: ORLY?!?!?!?!?! Figures, my Gardin is pinched up a bit so it should be no biggy - I didn't think to try it, just assumed.
I think I'll wait 'til Saturday as I won't have time to ride there and to CM in time, plus I'd rather not be rushing while shoulder-hanging my new frame :) DSR (Devil Strip Rollers) rides/info: http://www.devilstriprollers.com/ Beer, +1 to Shanghai and C'est What. Also: Smokeless Joe on John just north of Adelaide (opposite Hooters kinda) has a wonderful selection and often some decent brews on tap. Does the Amsterdam Brewery have a bar in the new building? I love their Frambroise in the summer, and the seasonal wheat ales... mmm (the MacAuslan Apricot Wheat is beautiful). Beer Bistro on King north east at Yonge has a great selection, often some wicked brews on tap there. I went to a beer tasting at Castro's (Queen East in the beaches, near Wineva) one summer, but not sure if they actually have decent stuff there or if it was just providing a place for the tasting. That is all. |
if you like beer try caledonian 80 shilling (scotland). i think the deal of the year is at the amsterdam brewery where you can get a 25 pack of their beer for $29, which i think is even less than the cheap domestics. try their dutch amber or the seasonal "tilted kilt".

Not to be a complete negative nelly about messing for the summer.... with the World's here this year, it's a great year to be riding and gettin' into the messenger scene.

Flanders: "No foot-longs, they make me nervous!"

Speaking of footlongs, what are you doin for lunch Wes? hahahahah.....call me at the shop...
What I meant with the negative courier comment was pretty much explained to the "T" by Fixedude and Traffic Jammer. Don't get me wrong, you'll have a really good time and meet a lot of good people. And Maki, it's a shame your not a cowboy because I can only then imagine the funny ass **** you would post on craigslist. |

And let's be fair guys, a group of 20 casual riders on busy downtown streets at night is probably equally unsafe and more congestive than a bunch of wannabe cowboys* running lights at warp 11.
Just sayin. Please rebut so I can continue bottled up rants in subsequent posts. *yes I consider myself a wannabe cowboy ya Ill save the racing for the track or the sprints...running reds for a "group" ride aint worth my time not to mention the mad drama it would bring if my kids had no father and wife had no man...seen? rant all you want but thats just logic... |

are you saying that it's a good, or bad time to get into messing, with the World's here this summer? Also, is it possible to get paid a minimum daily earnings?

a guarantee is unlikely since it is piecework, although there is usually enough work for you to make minimum if you work for it. |
Anyone have any recommendations/suggested changes/etc with this route?
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1737365 Mike and I have ridden it as far as around the 14km mark at Dixon & Royal York, and that section was smooth sailing. Just not sure about the Dixon -> Islington -> Rexdale -> Hwy 27 part. |

Yup I meant good because of all the fun stuff going on. Loads of parties, the Worlds weekend, and the masses of riders from the world over coming to TO to jam. Woot! Gonna be a good time. '95 was a blast.

Highway 27 leading to Humber isn't safe. I'd want to come in from the east, maybe Humber Blvd.
