Anyway I highly doubt the shoulder is healed enough to ride the Don or Kelso this Sunday. I am going out for a light ride tonight though to see how it feels. 5 days off and I'm going stir crazy.

Am excited that I now have an off road and road wheelset for the bike. Just waiting for the casette to arrive. No more changing tires for me.

Re: drivetrain stuff, FWIW I run a 1/8" chain on my 3/32" cog/chainring setup and have had no problems whatsoever. I've got the stock IRO cranks which are a 130BCD spider I believe. I figure as long as the chain is only going around those cogs and not a derailler or tensioner, I'm good. I'm at about 1180-1200kms on the 1/8" chain so far with one cleaning.

edit: Anyone else going to the Record breaking thing at Yonge/Dundas tomorrow? 1,000 bikes with bells I believe is the target, I'm probably going to head over, should be fun - that's at 12. Then there's Bells on Bloor which I'll probably go to as well, that's Sunday starting at Bloor/High Park at 12.

I think I am gonna forgo Kelso for a trip up to Hardwood instead. More miles driving....more trails to ride...and of course the Canada Cup pre-ride doesn't hurt either. Anyone? Beuller?

the guys in racer sportif certainly have the racer snob appeal.

the deal is you can run and crank you want, any chainring / bcd you want; any old 3/32" chainring will work. i use a converted 130 shimano crank and 3/32" chainring with a 1/8" chain no problemo. you can even use a 1/8 chain with a 3/32 cog if you want (just not the other way around).

Wow - I've never been to Racer Sportif, but its the one shop I hear un-provoked complaints about everywhere. Must be a real stand-up joint.

not a bad shop per se, just very niche-oriented. not really interested in getting people started or selling to anyone that doesn't have race-oriented cycling aspirations. they do sell nice stuff...

Yup, they have an incredible selection of old steel frames that are in mint condition. The only shop I have seen that has more is Jan up at High Park Cycle but his "store" is cramped and it is hard to see the frames. Plus, he doesn't like human beings so it is a pain in the ass to go in there. Both he and Racer Sportif charge a helluva a lot for their stuff too, it is nice to see but I would never buy from either place.....

I think Andre and I are still gonna hit Kelso. We'll probably head out fairly early so we can be back early in the afternoon as we both have other stuff goin on later in the day.

Rode up to campus today to hit up the gym and get some studying done, and after that I headed over to the Fortinos at 27 & Rexdale to get a bite, so I needed to lock up somewhere. The bike racks outside either of the two entrances weren't even bolted to the ground. I ended up locking a $2k road bike to their patio fence - which was set into the concrete sidewalk. Gotta love those suburban planners.

I wish more developers would just ask the City of Toronto to install their bike rings instead of just buying the cheapest junk possible. The city ones are pretty well thought out and, most importantly, embedded in cement. I should mention this to my school admin office, should they even care, because the racks they installed could be broken through with a decent hacksaw.

A big place like Fortinos, I'd just bring it in with me.

Racer Sportif: They've always treated me just fine. I don't go there much, but I do get tires from them at the bike show most years. When I bought my road bike they tried to sell me an Aquila that I didn't really care for... but it was exactly within the budget I'd quoted. In the end I ended up spending double my budget to get what I wanted, so it was more my lack of knowledge of how much what I wanted was going to cost rather than them trying to sell me a bike I didn't want.

Yeah Racer Sportif always has treated me well, but I can understand that they are not a newbie shop. But they must be doing something right, they've been there for a long time.

I strongly suggest that everyone visit Portland sometime in their life, REALLY cool place.

So well thought out you can break the ring from the post with a small length of 2x4. Don't get a false sense of security with those things.

cav: I've also heard about the 2x4 bit, but how much force would you need on a small piece of 2x4 to really break the ring? I've also heard that the freeze/thaw cycle significantly weakens the metal itself, causing the post to become brittle.
