Took my frame into my LBS to have them look at it and see what it would cost to build it up as a FG and they said $550 plus labour! Which was a lot more than I planned on spending. The mechanic I was talking to also suggested for that price I could get a new FG with new parts, etc.
He suggested the Kona PW or the Giant Bowery. What other basic FG bikes are available for test rides/purchases in Toronto? I'm not sure of any stores that carry the Bianchi pista, Specialized Langster, Redline 925, etc.

somnambulant 05-30-08 02:21 PM

What size frame are you looking for?

Cycle Solutions on Parliament has at least one Langster in stock. La Bicicletta carries Redline. I think I heard there's a shop selling pre-built IRO bikes now as well.

That headtube reminds me of those 'comfort' road bikes that Specialized sells. ;)

yeah man, you think they could have gone a little more aggressive with the angles.

I'm a 58 or thereabouts. I just phoned Bikes on Wheels and they said their built-up IRO Mark Vs are going for anywhere between 6-800, which sounds pretty expensive.

I was hoping more in the 5-650$ range.

did you ask if they had any fuji tracks in?

they had them for under 5 last time i was in there

krusty 05-30-08 03:55 PM

Kyle, does your new pursuit frame take a 650c front? If so, have I got a wheel for you! Corima Aero tubular carbon with 12 spokes.

kylehutton 05-30-08 04:22 PM

it would be interesting to try out some barspinzzzzz

the frame is built for 700c front and rear.
the angles arent quite as bad as they look in that photo

here's one fully built up

If anyone is interested, I was looking at the Lenovo website today and noticed they're running a clearance on certain models of desktops and notebooks. The prices are ridiculously low for certain T60 and X60 models, so if you need a new laptop, check it out. $800 ThinkPad tablet pc is a pretty snazzy deal.

Cyclemania on Danforth has their own track bikes for $450-$500. They are pretty nice, last I checked formula hubs on alex rims, nice cranks and parts.

To build a fixed gear if you have the frame and all parts should be nowhere near $500. What parts do you have/need for the bike to be built? Some of the shop guys here have great parts at good prices.

All I've got is a frame, fork, headset (that needs to be overhauled), BB (that needs to be overhauled), stem, handlebars, maybe a seat+seatpost, and cranks which need to go according to the LBS guy (says the spider will get torn apart because their too cheap.) He also said my fork looks too old/cheap to withstand any significant pressure that would result from a hard brake.

jet sanchEz 05-30-08 07:20 PM

It sounds like you have pretty much everything except wheels and a chain (and maybe a crank). Wheels have dropped a lot in price lately, especially on eBay, just order a set and start riding. Everything else will fall into place.

Headsets and b/bs are fairly easy to do yourself. If it is a cup and ball b/b you can always consider getting a cartridge one. I find it easier to replace than repair. My one wastefull action with bikes. Anyways, how to repack your b/b , headsets. Great tutorials. Forks can be found cheap, ask various LBS or try Bikechain or BikePirates. Cranks, same thing. I got my s/s crank, an older shimano biopace double off c-list for $20, and the one one the fixed gear is a RPM from Cyclethearpy that Shapelike sold me for a sweet price.

If I buy a new BB, how do I make sure the chainline is straight with my rear wheel?

pardon me for saying this is a horrible analogy. drunk driving is by nature irresponsible, simply riding a bike that doesn't coast isn't. i don't think you have a leg to stand on if you're arguing that riding brakeless with no foot retention is a good idea.

BTW - i've dropped a chain while riding with clips and straps and i'm still alive (and unscathed).

Just so you know, I am not coming from an angle advocating riding brakeless without toe straps, I am coming from an angle NOT advocating riding brakeless at all. Yeah, I know the bike looks so much cooler, and you don't NEED brakes because of a, b, c, and d reasons, and every ride feels like a jaunt around the velodrome, BUT:

When it comes down to it, there are a lot of people out there who are, after drinking a six pack, probably still better drivers than a lot of people who are completely sober. The issue is not one of measuring ability but one of measuring IMPAIRMENT. Consuming alcohol will impair one's ability to drive, regardless of their innate baseline of skill. Not having brakes will impair one's ability to slow down a bike quickly regardless of riding ability. (If you doubt this, I can ride down Lawrence from the Bridal Path on my CX bike, with you on your fixy, and we can see who stops first from 75km/h) Not having toe straps will further undermine the ability to slow down. But seeing as you have already taken it upon yourself to impair your own stopping ability, who the hell are you to tell anybody that they are in the wrong for impairing their own even further? I think you are just mad that they are COOLER THAN YOU.

So, in closing, the leg my argument stands on is the same that I pull one-footed strapless skids with; MY RIGHT LEG.

jeremywhitehorn 05-30-08 11:25 PM

man, relax - i would never ride brakeless nor do i think it's a good idea. i think we probably agree on the issue anyway. and for the record i don't think driving after a six pack is a good idea no matter how good a driver you think you are.

i'm not really mad that brakeless riders are cooler than me because, well, i'm not really cool at all i guess. in the words of bart simpson "isn't trying to be cool the furthest thing from being cool?"

Seriously?

I was at the Toronto Crit for a bit, it was cool to see some wicked-nice bikes and the crowd was pretty good too. I talked to an older guy for a bit and we were both surprised that the two leaders of the race lapped the pack. He was from California and said that there are crits there all the time but that has never happened in a race that he had ever seen. I don't know too much about crits but does this sound correct to anyone else?

veteran_youth 05-30-08 11:51 PM

Really defending the analogy more than the stance.

jeremywhitehorn 05-31-08 01:00 AM

fair enough - i guess i have my own issues around impaired driving...

Seriously. FWIW, I was there for critical mass. I don't give a **** if there's a bike lane on bloor. No matter what the Sun Says.

Also, nobody was "throwing their bikes over the fence and running away" like they implied. We simply rode off. There was a moron that tried to ride past the police roadblock and was arrested. Duh.
