1750 pages of replies......jesus ****ing christ i just wanted to see if you had or where in the video in toronto on the main page

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=468120

very impressive, 10x the other messenger stuff i have seen because it is real and also well made

is any of u the people on the video?

TRaffic Jammer 09-22-08 02:31 PM

You won't find any of them here, they have better stuff to do after riding all day generally. Most are FB friendly though.
I won't say Discovery did a bad job on it, but it could have been better, as a 'tribe' even messengers run in packs/cliques not a cohesive group en mass.

jaysilent 09-22-08 03:00 PM

i should hv figured, a rap star, single mom, party guy and a dude that may not have internet probably ain up n here.

but that true of all groups no? cliqs w/in packs w/in tribe cept tribe trumps / symbolzes the common thread that they all relate to, in this case the road and the job
all 4 were impressive, the rookie was so very rookie and honest about it, the rap star is angry and dealing with it, the mom is a mom ain no real than that and the young guy charlie just exude freindly

impressive

TRaffic Jammer 09-22-08 05:59 PM

As for tribalism, they will all help each other out if they can. I've taken the runs off another messenger on his way to emergency and fit them into my day so he'd still get paid, even though he was with another company. God help you if a messenger with a radio sees you riding a stolen messenger bike ...... just give the bike up when you get cornered.

jeremywhitehorn 09-22-08 06:06 PM

anyone else see jeopardy tonight. best clue i've seen in a while: "a bicycle which does not coast and is favoured by bike messengers worldwide is refered to as a fixed _____?"

the guy answered "fixed drive" and they gave it to him! oddly the whole "racing bike" category "happened" to involve products from the friendly trek bicycle corporation...

tjfix 09-22-08 06:16 PM

dude, how much are they paying u to promote this ordinary video.

Yeah, we're social folks.

If you liked the feel of the discovery channel segment, check out Pedal which is a well done doc on NY messengers. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VckgDaKpRK0

aaronu 09-22-08 08:11 PM

ive been curious about Pedal for a while. do you happen to know if there are any stores in town where i could rent it?

In Toronto for a few weeks--time to do my part to bloat this thread. I'm used to being able to get a good $1.50 long espresso in Montreal. Not so in TO. I liked the stuff at Manic, but it's a 15 minute ride and not that cheap.

Obviously I'm killing time or something, 'cause my question is simple: where can I buy a stove-top espresso maker for a fair price? Chinatown?

(Another thing...anyone here have a 16mm projector or editing table? I'd make you all the coffee you want in said stove-top maker if I could use it a couple times over the next few weeks.)

Ikea's is $30. Otherwise try Tap Phong, 360 Spadina Ave. There will be a decently priced one there for sure.

Thurs Martini thingy, anyone object if I bring a surprise non martini imported beverage for tasting? An experience to remember I promise.

You could get one at taphong in Chinatown but I'd recommend SasMart in Kengsinton market just north of the park on Augusta.

1.50 espresso isn't likely to be had, one of the least expensive quality places is I Deal coffee's is $2.00 or so. What part of town are you in? We might be able to suggest something closer to you.

Would be a neat coincidence, but nah.

Thanks for the advice, all. I'll check out the place at Kensington Market for the stove-top maker.

Not quite, more Asian in nature, but not from "Asia".

Herbie_Glick 09-23-08 08:46 AM

ha, sounds like your bringing a mailorder bride!

Arrack brewed in a burned out Range Rover radiator?

speaking of couriers, films, and films about couriers... i'm appealing to the great resources of the t.o. fixed thread for some info:

i've been cast in the lead role for a bike-themed sci-fi film so i'm looking for a) a messanger-style bag b) a radio (or possibly two - not sure if they have to work or not) c) points on etiquette to use said radio (i promise not to go too overboard with the method acting).

thanks! or should i say: "10-4"

jet sanchEz 09-23-08 09:58 AM

"Say again" is the standard on-air request for the repeat of information. I always hear "Repeat that?" used on TV shows/movies but it is never used in reality as the word "repeat" is only used by doctors over the radio in regards to dosages of medication.

zippered 09-23-08 10:22 AM

sweet, that's the kinda dirt i was hoping for! i'm very keen that things are done as realistically as possible, and i think/hope the director agrees...

i'm so excited: http://www.frontlinefilms.net/cycles.html
