yeah i was thinking of those ones. i'm trying to decide on some winter footwear; last year i tried some neoprene socks which turned out to be not too great. i think a pair of goretex hiking boots might have to do the trick...

What about Pearl Izumi shoe covers? There have to be quality winter cycling shoes out there - Northwave, Sidi, Lake?

Flimflam 11-10-08 10:48 PM

Love that shot - serious game face :D I'm due to have my little one with me for the Riverdale weekend, but I'm sure she'd enjoy checking out some bike racing for a bit.

The Lake boots look pretty kickass. I just go with two pairs of socks and my Cannondale Roams, if it's wet I'll put on my MEC bootie cover things.

Forgetting cellphone in the car of a buddy who lives in North York = epic fail.
Ride out to east North York to get it = pretty tiring.
Stretching after getting in = best. feeling. ever.

Schleep.

Gaerne Eskimos, warm/dry feet all last winter, with nothing other than socks and these boots.

Flimflam 11-11-08 08:36 AM

TJ - are they SPD compatible?

iherald 11-11-08 08:45 AM

I was riding my mountain bike this week and noticed when I was in the easy gears on the back and putting a lot of torque, it was skipping. New chain?

TRaffic Jammer 11-11-08 08:50 AM

They are SPD compatible, a little on the expensive side, but considering how many years I've ridden with cold, wet/damp feet it's so worth it. I've found over the last few years I've become unable to tolerate the cold in my extremities as much as I used to. Old man circulation reduction?... bah, who knows? These are the most water/slush proof things I've ever ridden with. The only thing I can think of that is warmer and more moisture proof is Keith's winter method of platforms and Sorels.

$$$?

TRaffic Jammer 11-11-08 10:05 AM

They were 250-ish at Racer Sportif. More than I wanted to pay, but after last winter....money well spent.
I don't remember even doubling up on socks at any point last winter, I might hit Mark's Workwarehouse for some felt liners for the bottoms this year.

That cassette was almost new when you got the bike. A new chain should work out just fine.

Perfect. It was a Durace 9 speed chain, correct?

Does anyone know anyone who rides a blue Steelwool?

They locked it up in front of Bikes On Wheels a few days ago and now it looks like this.

If anyone knows the owner, you might wanna let them know...

TRaffic Jammer 11-11-08 02:20 PM

They left it locked up at Kensington for a few days !?!

MattRennick 11-11-08 02:28 PM

yep, levels, open pros and all... i don't know what it had in terms of cranks and stem / bars, etc. but apparently one of the guys from the shop went out and put some sort of cover over the brooks to try to diminish the attention to it... didn't work, i guess.

iherald 11-11-08 02:36 PM

that's too bad, it's a nice frame! I like the stainless steel lugs

shapelike 11-11-08 02:39 PM

Sympathy: that really sucks.
Commons sense: what did you think would happen?

TRaffic Jammer 11-11-08 03:08 PM

I'm amazed that back wheel hasn't been cut off to get at the hub.

~Stuart~ 11-11-08 03:27 PM

and i just bought a new frame... i coulda liberated this one :P jk

2wheelsgood 11-11-08 03:42 PM

i saw that steelwool locked up there like, a week ago! kinda dumb but still, that really sucks.

TRaffic Jammer 11-11-08 03:42 PM

looks like it needs to be liberated lest it get twisted ... will bikes on wheels cut the chain off and save the frame for him?

jet sanchEz 11-11-08 03:53 PM

Wow, that sucks. Only a few days and it looks like this?

elTwitcho 11-11-08 04:17 PM

That looks like the steelwool I saw a few weeks back on Danforth (same color anyway). Tragic to see that happen to any bike let alone a really nice one like that.

Mind you, I'd try finding some bushes to bury my bike in before I'd try leaving it locked overnight in Kensington. Still sucks though

kergin 11-11-08 07:58 PM

I was walking up Augusta the other night when I noticed that very bike locked outside BoW. It's been there for almost a week. Someone must hate their bike, I guess.

I hope the shop saves that frame at least; its a very versatile little guy.
