My commute into the financial district is always pretty hectic. I ride along Adelaide from Bathurst to Bay St, and then down to Front. On the way home I take Richmond instead of Adelaide. I think I need to find a new route... despite there being 4 lanes most of the way cars still feel the need to buzz me, honk at me and tailgate me. The road is also super crappy and criss crossed with degraded streetcar tracks. They should dedicate a lane on one of those streets for bikes... there is so much room for it. I can see the fear in alot of the bike commuters eyes going along there during rush hour, and I've had a few close calls already. The safest parts of my commute are when I run red lights on some of the smaller streets crossing Adelaide because I get a nice stretch of road without any traffic going by me.

I find a good tip is to always do alot of shoulder checks when you know a car is coming up behind you. This makes the driver acknowledge that you exist and they will tend to give you a little more room and will pay more attention to your upcoming actions. Also signaling helps alot at getting cars to give way to you.

I've always found oneways to be a biatch, particularly adelaide having just about been smeared there myself. Second the shoulder checks with the caution that a shoulder check isn't enough if you want to change lanes etc. Cagers don't often interpret a shoulder check as anything at all assuming they even see it (note the almost smeared comment above -- I'd shoulder checked to change lanes but didn't anticipate the 60km/hr approach of the delivery van a block away). Always, always, signal your intentions.

Act like a vehicle, but take the law in your own hands when the situation demands it. Always leave room between you and trucks and buses; and I second the caution about taxis (give them lots of room). Be sure when you do a shoulder check to look into the eyes of drivers, and recipricate by sometimes giving drivers the benefit of a doubt.

As soon as I hear a malicious honk I start riding in the middle of the lane. Probably depends on my mood the day of.

The other day I was doing a trackstand in the middle of the right lane waiting at a light and this guy pulled up behind me in his car and beeped at me so I look at him and I'm like WTF, so he waves his hand as to say, "move over I want to turn right and you're in my way" so i think to myself I'm not moving he can just wait.

so after he realizes I'm not moving he honks again and tries to swerve around me almost hitting the car waiting in the left lane, and I'm like this guys a ****ing jerk so I move a couple feet over to the left and pull another trackstand right in front of him to make a point that I'm not letting him through.

then the light turned green and I kept doing a trackstand for about ten seconds just to piss him off and then i sprinted away.

I'm not letting drivers get away with that kind of *****, without me messing around with them for a little

from bathurst/adelaide > S to wellington > E to spadina > S to front > E to bay? (a bit busy on front at times, though)

Sure, man. I will let you know if I'm heading out for an AM ride. I work Saturdays, so it would have to be Sunday AM. Wait a minute. Sunday mornings are meant for sleepy time....

Went for a quick evening ride in the financial district only to be escorted off the premises and the TD towers for skidding and trackstanding. Meanwhile, they left the other trials guys alone. What's up with that?
