I'm going to be moving to Toronto from Aurora (north of richmondhill, south of newmarket) Go pickup a used not so new looking bike, possibly single speed for getting around town. Or maybe a fixed gear but don't bling it up. I got one of them budget drx2000 rear wheels from cavern for wheel cheap (intended), but I think he's out of them now. There's also a bunch of beater perfect bike frames at Cavern if keith hasn't dumped those yet that would be perfect as well. Prepare to spend 1/3+ of that budget on locks if you don't have anything good already. Good as in krypto chain/mini U. And uh don't lock to those o-ring bike posts you see everywhere downtown. Igors = fence. Run away from that place. |
For an economical city beater try Cogs Cycles, he's got some good used bikes I hear, I'm not too sure on other places for used bikes but cavernmech tells people 20 times a day where to go so maybe he'll help you out. Sounds like you'll be able to get just what you want with the $$ from your Kona, in that case most any shop can hook you up
Don't buy squat from Igor, hell it's a shame karma isn't a quantifiable commodity or you'd be able to improve your own by stealing something from Igors shop. Also Uncle..Jakes? on Spadina is a theives shop too. |
doh, I am the redundant
|
Cog's is good for used stuff. Also try Set Me Free....they usually have a good selection of used stuff and they only buy at auction so the stuff is all above board. I still have 2 road frames...both 56 cm. If you want to get the beat down off your new bike buy from Igor. Jacob's is sketchy as hell also. Is Bikes on Wheels still doing used stuff?
|
Many Value Villages also carry bikes that can be used for beaters and they usually aren't more than $40 or so, I've bought some great bikes for my friends there.
Where is Cog's Cycle? |

Bikes on Wheels has some good used stuff once in awhile. My friend got a cruiser there that she's in love with.
|
The Cyclemania on Danforth West of Chester has some used bikes as well as there own brand on sale for good prices. Around $300 for some of thier bikes, and a nice Bianchi in the window for $295 I believe. Good stuff at nice prices, bedside manners could be improved abit though.

It isn't that sweet pinkish Bianchi I posted here a little while ago? The one that I am desparate to locate? And yeah, the guy who runs the shop at Ossington and Bloor (original owner, I think) also could use some lessons in manners, he is a bit like Igor in that area. |
Cogs has a pink Bianchi complete for $350.
|
wow, thanks so much for the great responses everyone. So speedy. It looks like theres alot of places to buy good used bikes in t.o which is great news. I'll have to look around but i imagine ill be buying pretty soon and ill upload a picture when it all goes through. So i guess the Targa I have now isn't worth bothering with? And would it be waste of time to try and sell my Kona to bike shop? Thanks again everyone.
|
If your targa works, i'd say use that.
|
it doesn't work very well, front brake is a write off and the back brake isn't so hot either, both derailleurs are completely ****ed and theres a fair bit of rust throughout. Im basically wondering if its worth fixing up or if i should get something from a bike shop. Im leaning towards the latter.

Just read about 2 people (1 didn't make it) who got hit riding on Warden just north of 19th (very close to my house). Hit from behind by some 76 year old guy. Daytime.
Be careful out there... |

The Bianchi that someone mentioned at Cyclemania for $295 was the exact same bike that I bought off of CL two weeks ago for $75 but my find was in much better condition. I gave it to a friend, damnit! There was also a very nice Raleigh track bike that he wanted $500 for, not a bad buy and I'm sure you could talk him down a bit. |

excuse me while I check my 6/49 ticket (42 mil payout)...................with any luck Toronto will have a downtown velodrome pending the outcome
|
I'll hold you to that!

Jammer, thanks for the tickets, think what you will of wakeboarders but they built a more then decent skate park and the girls were fantastic. Plus I'm pretty sure no matter what you did this weekend if it involved being outside it went well.

Anyone riding this week? I miss buzzing through T.dot with a posse o' fixed gears My youngest daughter now has a new 20 inch wheel SS, with hand brakes(new for her), she's so pleased with how much faster she is.:D :p Thank-you Zellers for 40% off. A little bit a malicious-ness from the punk rock days surfaced Friday. I'm on my way from Yonge to Cavern along a busy lunch time Queen and some guy has gotten up behind me to ride the wheel. No biggie. As we whip along the parked cars' door zone a 'parking enforcement officer', comes strolling from in between parked cars into where we're riding...looking at his ticket pad he's filling out, not a clue as to what's about to happen. I don't deviate from my path whatsoever and he gets the "whifff" of the edge of my bag on his arm as I pass, i hear his girly scream fade behind me. I stop at Jarvis and the other guy comes to a stop beside me, laughin' like a hyena. "Dude, you shoulda seen him jump, he'll NEVER not look again!!!! he snorts". Ain't I a stinker? |
