Nope, does the donutride start somewhere in Toronto?

Here's the really fun part: there's actually different tracks that apparently get played at random. I've also heard *gangsta rap tune* "We ridin spinnaz, we ridin' spinnaz what what, we ridin' spinnaz ..."

gboy 08-03-06 08:33 PM

Oh, Mike, what's the shop that you work at? I might need to get my front wheel trued, as my home shop didn't bother to check before I took it away. How much does a trueing cost anyways?

Eglinton and Laird donut shop, i'm going to wait for them just north of Yonge/Steeles (read: not riding 20k's down to startpoint).

It does look flippin' cool but it's chances of being built are virtually zero aren't they?
This type of idea has been kicked around the world for over 20 years. I doubt if even a single prototype has ben built. The major flaw in the design is if you have a wreck inside the tunnels that need emergency crews, you can't get them to the accident scene easily. Add to that you'd need the permission/pay off every land owner along the corridor for the land usage rights. That alone can sink a forward thinking project like this.

I see a BIG windmill power generators along the route to provide power as well as wind..not just sealing ppl in to give you a windless 40km ride but rather a 40km/h tailwind regardless of the direction of travel.

From such a system you can also create a pneumatic/electromagnetic traincar system allowing for mass transit to be hung under, over or even around the tunnels depending on the design. All sustained by naturally renewable resources.

So a purge/cleaning of the shop basement will be happening this weekend. I have all sorts of old wheels, bars, cheapy frames (a few old cruisers) and whatnot that must go. Anything left down there come Tuesday will be trucked off to the dump. If anyone is interested in a beater bike or winter project come by on Saturday to have a look at whats down there. I would like to avoid dumping all this stuff....most of it is still usable...so help our overcrowded dump by giving some of this stuff a new home. 99% is free for the taking.
Oh yeah....there is too much to list and I don't have the time to root thru it to check on specific parts so please don't P.M. me asking if I have this or that...I might but you will have to check for yerselves.

TRaffic Jammer 08-04-06 07:22 AM

hmmm from my basement to yours. Sounds awesome, dang it if I'm not doing a big family picknik tomorrow.

somnambulant 08-04-06 07:23 AM

My recap of yesterday, from 4:30pm:

-leave work, front wheel is missing from bike
-curse humanity
-decide to take street car home, no idea what cash fare is. Get on, ask if it's still $2.50. I only have $2.50. The price is now $2.75. I start telling the driver that I don't have enough and my front wheel was stolen, I don't even get through the sentence and she tells me not to worry about it and get on. Slight glimmer of hope for humanity.
-get home, take car to go pick up bike. Just as I'm pulling in front of my office, it starts to pour.
-put bike in trunk.
-drive off, turn on wipers. Something is wrong with either the wiper motor or the windshield so they chatter like crazy (this has been happening for a while).. urge to kill rising.
-go to cavern, buy a new front wheel
-get home, start assembling: forgot rim tape. d'oh.
-decide to take road bike up to Sweet Pete's. They're closed. See lone guy inside. Knock on window. He comes to the door and I tell him I just need some rim tape. He invites me in. Asks me what diameter rim and how wide it is: I say it's 700c and pretty narrow. He looks around and says the only narrow tape is the mechanic's big roll so he'll roll some onto a bar plug for me. Wrapping.. wrapping.. wrapping.. "This aughta be enough for 10 rims" were his exact words I think. "No charge, just call it customer service". Once again, faith in humanity rises a little.
-get home, start wrapping rim. tape runs out about 2/3 of the way around. I start looking for the hidden cameras and expect some annoying tv host to jump into the room trailed by a camera crew.
-call Mike to regale him with my tales.. he gets all macgyver on me and suggests electrical tape until I can get to another shop. ghetto fabulous red electrical tape does the trick.

Oh, and I also had another flat tire on Wednesday morning. I think that brings me up to 6 in the past few weeks (plus one car tire).

edit: Keith: I'll try and come by tommorrow morning, but don't forget to keep an eye out for some (preferably black) risers for my fixie. What time are you opening?

In retrospect I have decided to impose a donation to the Bike Messenger Emergency Fund to gain entrance into the free stuff room. Everybody wins.

somnambulant 08-04-06 10:17 AM

wtf. I just body checked a mini-van that pulled an unexpected u-turn going through an intersection on campus. Bike is ok save for ripped bar tape.. I have a scrape on my arm and busted knuckles. Dude was very apologetic.. I left a dent and a scrape, he didn't want to exchange info. Fine by me. I think I got him worse than he got me.

I thought karma was set to rain it's love down upon me?!

TRaffic Jammer 08-04-06 10:21 AM

You are alive and well, good to hear? Sounds like Karma has already has my friend.

32flavours 08-04-06 10:24 AM

Wes, if there is any justice, the cycling gods will now rain massive karma down upon you and smite all your enemies.

Was it a QR or did the bum have an allen key? I've noticed a lot of bikes locked up with missing wheels, front or back, lately. It is that time of the year; Toronto gets inundated with vagrants and things go missing. My co-worker bought a Canadian Tire bike (against my advice, but whatevs) and his front brakes were stolen. Those things are 12bucks a pair! Crazy.

Yes, this is depressing. I may have to got some more lockage instead of my mini-brute through the rear triangle. I have a locking front skewer which, frankly, anyone with two vice grips could rip off.

Keith, I'll be by saturday morning. I still think we should have a bike swap. We could join the guys across from your shop :D
