Its called a fan...something most of the inhabitants of the platinums know nothing about. Ever notice at the beginning of a period the platinums are almost empty as the "privledged" are busy "networking" at the platinum club. I hate the fact that the real hockey lovers are restricted to the nosebleeds (if they can even afford to go) and the choice seats are filled with people who are only there to be seen. End Rant!
Edit...if I ever get fortunate enough to inhabit the platinums I am not gonna bathe for a week...wear my well worn but unwashed hockey jersey....and try to start a wave at every opportunity.

jeremywhitehorn 10-11-06 08:52 AM

now that i've been to a soccer game in south america, i am spoiled for seeing fanatic fans. at the first game of the season there were people lighting road flares, women in bikinis throwing confetti, playing instruments and EVERYONE was in team colours or jerseys (even me), no one sat at all or stopped singing during the game and only a fraction of the seats are reserved for tourists.

i would love to see some of this hysteria brought to hockey but i don't think that's going to happen due to our country's over polite british upbringing.

jeremywhitehorn 10-11-06 08:55 AM

with all this talk of wet weather, has anyone tries the new cycling waterproof jacket from MEC? i'd like to reaplace the goretex ski jacket i'm using as it is sweaty and bulky as hell.

It used to be like that.... when Canadians would watch the games outside.

cavit8 10-11-06 09:10 AM

Is that the whoosh jacket? I may actually break down and get waterproofs this year. Similar to Keith, the olde goretex isn't what it used to be.

Heads up that CBN's bike swap is Oct 22 http://tinyurl.com/egdnt.

Keith, check your PM's.

Shiznaz 10-11-06 09:14 AM

Are you talking about the 'NEW' Hydrocycle jacket? I was asking one of the MEC clerks about it and he said there was a production flaw (the factory in china used the wrong fabric or something) and the release of the jackets is being pushed back to some time in november. I like the look and functions of it though so I may bear with my crappy cycling jacket for a little while longer.

somnambulant 10-11-06 09:20 AM

I think mine is the Whoosh, but I could be wrong. Either way, I totally *heart* it. :P

jeremywhitehorn 10-11-06 09:22 AM

no, it was aboutr $100 and a companion to the pants they sell. i saw it on their website the other day but it appears to have been removed.

yeah, i think that's the one. for $100 it sounds like a steal.

what's with the $500 brand name waterproofs that MEC is selling these days? i thought they were supposed to all about value and functionality.

I've always stuck with non-waterproof cycling stuff, as I find goretex always = sweat sauna for me. Maybe the technology has improved though. Anyone have a jacket that is waterproof that you can actually excercise in?

TRaffic Jammer 10-11-06 09:26 AM

No no that was the gimmick to get the store off the ground , now it's profits.
Even with my pit zips mine gets kinda sweaty, I can't imagine wearing this unless it's chilly somewhat. Sweaty today.

Shiznaz 10-11-06 09:27 AM

hmmm... The hydrocycle jacket was listed like 30 minutes ago but it isn't now! SOMETHING IS AFOOT!

Here is the URL (no longer linked on the website)

Tempting. Last time I looked their cheapest goretex cycling jacket was double that.

the link still seems to be working. it's $115?

STEEKER 10-11-06 09:51 AM

Columbia jackets I get with my work discount I can't afford the fancy stuff but my Columbia does the job in the fall and winter

somnambulant 10-11-06 10:04 AM

ps. I just looked, and my jacket isn't the Whoosh. That (and the hydrocycle) are both Entrant coated, but my jacket is 3-ply goretex. They actually don't make mine anymore it seems. My pants are Entrant though and keep me quite dry.

It's nice because I don't think it necessarily looks like a cycling jacket, so it makes a good general-purpose wet/cold weather jacket. Plus I have the longest arms in the world, and as a cycling jacket it's cut long in the arms, which is nice. :P

Darkmother: these things still get a little swampy when you're riding hard, but it's still breathable. If I was going on a longer ride in the rain I'd probably go for something that would keep me WARM rather than DRY. Mine does have pit zips though, which I use pretty regularly.

The page still exists, but its not linked on any of the category pages, and it will only show up if you do a specific search query for it. I dunno if this means that they will be scrapping the line all together? I hope not, I was thinking of getting that jacket.

/me waves

I ended up getting their "whoosh" jacket, because I needed one right away. When I was last at MEC, I asked about the Hydrocycle. The dude looked it up on the computer, and told me that there were production problems with the item. Specifically, the reflective material they were using did not adhere properly to the DWR coating on the jacket. I was told that the item was on the site because they expected to be able to sell it by now, but they probably won't have it until the end of October at the soonest.

somnambulant, I think the jacket you've got is the "Zik" I wanted one like that, but I was spoiling for the safety yellow. Too bad they don't make it anymore, it looked like a good one.

jeremywhitehorn 10-11-06 06:36 PM

is it just me or does anyone else dislike the term "biker"? as in people at work call you "the biker"; i always thought a biker is a hell's angel. that is all.

Yup. My ears perk up when someone mentions the term biker, bikes etc. But it's invariably in reference to our bastardized^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H motorized cousins.

it took me a second to realize what you were talking about; i guess i'm used to the anglosized term "vietnamese subs". it seems the regular posters here live on them (and chinese savory buns). i forget the name of the shops but there are two good ones on spadina, on the west side just north of dundas. they say "vietnamese sandwitch" on the sign somewhere. if you walk north and see a store called "tap phong" you've gone too far. i usually pay about $3 for 2 subs.
guys, help me out what are these places called?

Like J said, two places west on Spadina north of Dundas. One of them sells it in paper bag and other in plastic.

The paperbag one is better. Or so it seems.

cavit8 10-11-06 09:31 PM

There's a few:
co yen (334 Spadina) --> try the honeyed chicken sub
banh mi (318 Spadina) --> I was here last week - not bad

These are probably the best in the area -- typically $1.50 per sub.

jyossarian 10-11-06 09:51 PM

Kewl. Does Co Yen sell the banh mi's in paper bags? I like the classic ones, but at $1.50, I'll give the honey chicken sandwich a shot. Thanks all!

Thanks! Sort of a business trip, but it's my wife's business. I'm just along for the ride as slave labor and telecommuting to my regular job. I remember you saying you worked at the Star. Do you work at the Star building on the Harbourfront?
