Shiz, I may have a spare crank. Any preference for length and BCD?

Looks like I am not around for the scotch night, even though I don't drink, would have been nice. Leaving on the 27th, coming back on the 30th from the realtives. Snow/beer/coffee ride before/after that would be best for me. Maybe I can convince cavit8 to make me an espresso from his new machine for that night. |

Opinions on quality of these http://toronto.craigslist.org/bik/247252850.html
Thinking about grabbing one as they are the right size but I don't want to invest in crap... |

What kind of tensioner are you getting? The surly is nice, better than the one I used. I prefer the halflink myself (I like the look better), although it makes switching cogs harder, tensioner is much better for this purpose. Other thing is to check the chain/cog/chainring combo. Ramped cogs from a cassette with a deraileur chain and ramped chainring makes for a jumpy chain, even with the tensioner. Misfitpyscles makes s/s cogs for $5. Awesome cog for the price. |

Hrmm, Alu makes me a little cautious as my steel steed already gives me a fair amount of shakes. Might wait until I can either grab steel and throw a carbon fork on it or get something with carbon stays/fork. Thanks for the quick response as usual all.
|
Yeah, cavernmch is right, it looks aluminium now that I take a closer look. The downtube is pretty thick.
What type of frame is your steel steed? It shouldn't shake much, I prefer steel for the streets, bendy ;) |
trek 660, its a lugged 531 frame its not bad its just that with the direction Toronto roads are facing I'd rather having something suck up the vibration rather then let it hit me in the junk.

Has anyone noticed drivers being particularly careless lately? I asked my gf about it last night, basically wondering if I'm just paying more attention for some reason of if people are actually driving more dangerously, and she seemed to think it was the latter as well. For example every time I'm waiting at a red light at an intersection that's even remotely busy cars are still coming through the intersection when the light is solidly red. That happens occasionally all the time of course, but it seems to have become the norm in the past 3-4 weeks.
Last night I was actually in MY car, waiting at a red light on Harbord @ Roxton with two other cars in front of me. The guy who had been tailgating me decides he's going to try and pass us in the bikelane, so I pulled over further to block him. I don't know where the hell he was trying to go since there were cars parked against the curb immediately ahead on the other side of the intersection and Roxton is one way, Southbound. When the light turned green he (of course) tail-gated me so close that I couldn't see his headlights in my mirror and then turned right onto Ossington (I went left, on my way home). I'm sure it'll only get worse as we get closer to the holidays. Stay safe out there, kids. |

All I have is square tapered. I think I have a set of 170's that fit 135BCD. I'll check later tonight.
George probably has some too, if you don't want to wait. I'll be out of the loop until Friday, likely. |

I'm convinced that as soon as it gets to the months where the fair weather bikers head inside drivers become less and less aware of anything besides cars on the road. In study after study that I've read cars pay more attention to cyclists when there are more cyclists to pay attention too. So when the number of cyclists drops dramatically, as it has in the last month or so, drivers tend to stop really thinking about us cyclists. Its the same reason I find it much more dangerous on my bike in the suburbs, because those drivers have no idea how to react with me on the road and have no clue how I'm going to react to them.
Either way I agree that drivers have been worse recently, I've had more close encounters with large cars in the last two weeks then I'd had all summer. |
True about the numbers of cyclists, but I don't find that this is issues with inattentive drivers, it's just people in too big of a hurry. Again, I'm chalking it up to the holidays. Another reason for me to say "bah humbug!" :)

I think it's just the seasonal extra happy feelings everyone gets that makes them drive with such exuberance. After all, there's only 12 shopping days left before Christmas.
As an aside, did Trackasaurus ever make it to TO. I recall he'd posted a fair while back that he was moving here from Montreal. |
Talking cars on the Devils page....

I think I have to get me one of these for the office.
