I'd carry at least the tool to get the cassette lockring off, in case you break a right side spoke on the rear. You can probably use the chain and your bike as a chainwhip somehow. I seem to remember seeing a replacement spoke that was made of flexible material...maybe you could use something like that without taking off the cassette. What are you going to run for wheels?

True, true. There's this neat tool with a red handle and a cassette lockring remover at the end, so it makes a chainwhip redundant. I had this on my tour, but have since lost it. Some japanese company made it, and I think I got it at Urbane.

Without going into detail, just about everything east of Toronto has some serious merit, and could even be argued to be better than the western 2/3rds. There's some serious character in Quebec and the maritimes- something not found in BC/AB/SK/MB. The Cabot Trail, Gaspe, Halifax, and everything in NL should be enough reason to include it. Just my humble opinion...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a mild Winter/Spring for St. John's because I have to go home for a wedding at the end of April and I want to bring my bike and do some day trips. I did a LOT of mountain biking growing up there, but never owned a road bike. Now it's time to see the other side of things. :)

I'd like to do quebec and the maritimes at some point. Especially PEI. For this tour I want to avoid taking more than one flight if possible, which going to California will allow.

Or you could just turn around and bike home from Newfoundland.... he he he

Don't stand near the edge on the Cabot Trail, and tech your brakes before starting it, best views I think...anywhere. I loved out East, when we took the kids camping all along the way. I even started speaking to people after a week or so. If the good people of the East can get me out of being anti social, you might just take over the region. Check out Hopewell Rocks for the biggest tides in the world, and walking on the ocean floor during low tide. Remember it is not always lobster season so if you are going with gluts of seafood in mind check ahead as it's seasonal. Book hotels ahead...or bring camping gear, if you can find a camping spot. We didn't book, and juuuust happened to be there at the same time as the tall ships when the population of the coastal area had tripled...:lol: We found a spot ...so lucky. A grand adventure....you'll love it.

Having only been out to the West coast I can't comment on out East, but it seems that most people like the west, but everyone raves about out east. I would love to bike the Maritimes. Farthest east I've been is Quebec City, went over New Years a few years ago. Absolutly beautiful in the winter.

All the people is nice....401 becomes a 2lane road and it's RV heaven in the summer. Re: Wide loads driven by the RL equivalent of the Robin Williams character in RV. The bikers are awesome for back roads and directions and where good eats can be had..(dudes in leather vests...not spandex)

I was on one of those there tallships jammer. That was quite the trip, I'm sorta torn up about what happened on the Picton Castle. She's a good boat and they run a tight ship they must be going through hell about what happened.

Hell I've been through worse then they had and didn't lose anyone, freak accidents are the worst I just hope she went quick. Drowning in the middle of the Atlantic due to exhaustion is not what she deserved.

As for biking I gotta say that nothing quite matches the US south, you've got amazing food, great roads, varied terrain and some of the nicest people I've ever encountered.

You'll find a lot of surfers who sail and a lot of sailors who surf. Ocean is kind that way good surfing days=bad sailing days, good sailing days=bad surfing days. Sailing was my first passion and love ever in life, then my genes caused me to be a 140lb lightweight and then I destroyed a knee in 8th grade so after rehab I focused on surfing and then found TBI and did that for awhile which led to tallships before I got a real job. The real job sent me back to the tallships to cover them for Newsworld during the festival.

Anyways there is my tallship story, if any of you guys have extra supplies like varnish and sandpaper around TBI would kill for it and you couldn't give it to better people.
