And yeah, iherald, my friend went to a Baskin Robbins thinking that Ben&Jerry's ice cream was a flavour; she and I will have to have a long chat about smoking pot and what it does to your brain cells in the near future ;) |
I've had a great response for all you guys, and from people off the board, about wanting to ride with a camera.
So an annoucement: IF the weather holds for the weekend and we have a beautiful Saturday I would like to invite everyone out for a Bike BBQ. I've wanted to get stills and video of everyone and their bikes as well as hook up the bike cam rigs I have for anyone who wants to show off their skills during daylight. Polish up your bikes and bring out the bling. Fixed/ss would be great if we can keep it to that. I have a big garage that has no car so bike parking is no problem. This is a totally weather dependent event so as the week progresses I will continue to update people. Come for an hour or come for the whole afternoon we'll eat, drink and be merry. If the weather is still doing well I'll start collecting a list of peeps who are interested. And I'll have information at the Safety Meeting for sure. I hope people want/do come out and that everyone rides safe! |

Also: Helmets = good. Every time I consider not wearing mine I see something like that and it makes me smarten up. Same helmet as me, too. |

Without further details about the accident you can conclude absolute jack all. Repetition of the "always wear your helmet" mantra does nothing but divert attention from the issues that really cause people to perish on the roads - riding skills and those that are out of our control (drunk drivers etc). I don't want to start a helmet debate here, feel free to pm me to continue. |
I've heard lots of stories of people who were quite obviously saved (either their life, or at least paralysis) by their helmet. I have never heard any stories of people who were killed/paralyzed/etc because of a helmet.
Therefore I will continue to wear mine. Plus it makes me look all aero and racey. ;) Whether anyone else wears one or not is their choice (for now at least). |

Ah ha ha! Too late. What kills people is vehicles hitting or crushing people. While you can't definitively draw conclusions from a single incident, the case control literature is pretty convincing. Except to guys like Curnow and his libertarians. I agree that safe roads are the critical issue and emphasis on helmets detracts (maybe) from movement in improving safety overall, but saying that helmets don't have a positive impact on safety in an individual crash doesn't convince me. People mix levels of benefit too often when they look at these things.

... If I wear shorts will it get warmer? |
no, it'll probably get colder. Just like how we're all not going to talk about the weather forecast for the weekend.
speaking of which, just got on the Paris-Ancaster website to see if there was any update on trail conditions (deciding what kind of tires to run) and saw this: THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS REGISTERED. WE GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR ONGOING SUPPORT OF THE PARIS TO ANCASTER RACE. WITH UNPRECEDENTED NUMBERS OF RACERS EXPECTED THIS SUNDAY WE FEEL IT IS PRUDENT TO LIMIT THE FIELD IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF THE RACE. THE FIELD LIMIT IS NOW SET AT 2000 RACERS. THIS WILL LIKELY BE ACHIEVED THROUGH ON-LINE REG ALONE. IF THERE ARE SPACES AVAILABLE ON SATURDAY WE WILL ACCEPT REGISTRATION IN PERSON UNTIL THE FIELD LIMIT IS REACHED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT CANADA'S LARGEST RACE! Crazy! |

I’ve taken a tumble/ fall/ crash/ tip over & bumped off the road by cars & don’t think I even scratched my helmet! But I’ll never say wish I was wearing my lid. It’s like shoes I just put it on. I’m sure it will become a legal thing for everyone soon?

Wow you just reversed from "I'm sure it will become law" to "I doubt it to" (sic). It is illegal for anyone under 18 not wear a helmet.

Don't care whether someone chooses to wear a helmet or not (I used to religiously before last years FFL ride). But government mandated **** is ********. |
They've already set the wheels in motion, grandfathering in legal helmets for kids, pretty soon not a soul will think twice about slapping a lid on for just about anything. Social Engineering at it's best.

I guess you are right, I cannot say with 100% certainty that the helmet saved this guys life but he was hit from behind by a car doing 40mph/64kmh and thrown 40 feet/12m and blacked out. He didn't post pics of the car but that helmet is pretty messed up and so is the bike, clearly a lot of force was in action here. I'll cut 'n paste his post just for the hell of it:

I bounced up onto her windshield, broke it, hit my head on the passenger side bar, and as she slammed on the brakes I was thrown 40 feet, landed on my left side, and skidded for about 10 more feet. Ruined my bike, my favorite pair of Assos bibs, my Giro Atmos helmet (saved my life, for sure) and the paramedics cut off my jersey, gloves, and arm warmers (I get cold ok). Amazingly, I survived with only some bad road rash on both my knees, bad bruising or hematoma on my left shoulder/arm, some smaller abrasions to my face, and 4 stitches just below my left knee. All I really remember from the crash was a very very loud bang and then waking up later to the paramedics telling me not to move my neck. I spent 6 hours in the emergency room at Stanford,(I picked the right place to get hit by a car, that's an excellent hospital) and less than a week later (this was on Tuesday), I'm back on my feet, hopefully back on the bike next week. I feel pretty lucky that I escaped with such minor wounds, especially with people telling me about the damage I did to her car. Always wear a helmet, that's what I learned. |
