Attention Cutters: This weekend is the Little 500 at IU. Apparently it's shown on HDNET, if anyone has HD.

Parkour fun for the whole family

230USD for a set of ATAC aliums and sidi dominators?

iherald 05-03-07 02:17 PM

I was looking at Trico Iron Case and the US MSRP is $310. MEC has it for $600! That's a nice little exchange rate!

somnambulant 05-03-07 02:21 PM

Velotique has it for $499, down from $599, so something must be getting lost in the translation!

They also rent them for $40/wk.

TRaffic Jammer 05-03-07 02:27 PM

So nice to see consistent pricing and that the CO-OP is 100bones MORE dear than the Boutique.....maddness

Shiznaz 05-03-07 02:30 PM

I'm sure you could make something almost as strong, lighter and way cheaper... Find some big ABS plastic storage trays and hinge them together and fill with foam or something... 600 dollars is just insane for a box. I wouldn't want to own one either as they are really bulky and expensive. What the heck do you do with it once you get to your destination?

iherald 05-03-07 02:31 PM

Assuming you pay full retail for it, if you drive down to Buffalo the cost is $342 Cnd (give or take). That allows you to rent a car for the day, get a buffet dinner and still come out ahead!

$40 a week rental...that's a good price...

I was thinking about how to make one myself. It can't be that hard.

My trip to France next summer would be ideal for a hard case, since I'm being driven around in a bus and riding. Your summer riding trip would likely make it less then ideal. But, some have wheels, so you could just tow it behind you on your trip across the country.

Shiznaz 05-03-07 02:37 PM

Even on little short trips "Hey do you want to hold onto this giant heavy plastic box for me for a week?"

somnambulant 05-03-07 02:41 PM

I'd rather have one of these:

Anyone know where I can find Shimano STI top caps/faceplaes.. anywhere?? I've called the usual suspects around Toronto and NO ONE has them. I've found a few places online, but they can't/won't ship to Canada. The only other place that has them and ships to Canada (competitivecyclist.com) only has 10sp DA caps. I need 9sp Ultegra. I'll even pay a finder's fee of $5 to anyone can help me get a left/right set. Hell, I'll get two because this is so damn difficult. Apparently Shimano has all these regulations on who can sell what and where, and doesn't give LBSs the small parts they need. Damned if I'm getting new shifters becasue of this...

As for transporting bikes, a canvas bag ('housse' en francais) is perfect for transporting bikes if you pack it right. Those hard cases weight a ton and can't be carried around easily unless they have wheels, which costs like $500. I got one from Nashbar for like $30. Along with a set of padded wheelbags, my bike survived a long trip through Europe on some of its crummiest rail and air lines. The only problem was when some dumb-ass, fat little Korean kid THREW his hard-shell suitcase, with all his puny might, on top on my bike on a train in Belgium.

Did you try parts unknown?

How did you pack it?

cavit8 05-03-07 03:14 PM

Here's how I pack mine using a poly tarp

It works really well. Saddle goes in a carry on.

No help here, but if you find a place let me know. I'll likely go in on the order to replace my scratched/dented 105 10sp caps.

I seriously doubt they have 'em, but I'll have a look since it's next to one of my favourite sushi places.

Wheels in bags at each side, bars removed and attached to the toptube, fork and stem turned around with plastic spacer installed, seattube all the way down, chain on the big ring. Bike goes in seat-down. Wrap read-derailleur with rags/socks. Use foam on certain parts that stick out to prevent the finish being rubbed off. It sounds complicated, but by the end of my trip I could do it all in about ten minutes. Just make sure you get a shoulder strap with good padding if you're walking around often.

So Ted just stopped by with his crazy Don trail maps. He asked if he could leave his bag at the shop while he went for a quick 1 hr ride in the Don.."Of course but where is your bike" I asked him..."its outside"....I look outside and see a Specialized road bike. Yes...he is rocking the Don on his road bike with 23c's...what an animal.

I_bRAD 05-03-07 04:30 PM

Any chance I might see one of them there maps?

I want to get some tech manuals off our Shimano rep anyway so I'll see if Shimano Canada is being anymore helpful in '07 ...
