hahaha.. totally. Can you say "bad tire choices?" I actually read an interview with Jonathan Page at lunch where he was talking about that video and saying how important tire choice and tire pressure is in cross racing. He said that was the problem for nearly everyone in that corner. I mean, the way people slid on their backs along the ground there, I can't imagine what ANY tires would do to help you. But, dude finished 2nd in the Worlds, so I guess he knows. :P

TRaffic Jammer 09-07-07 01:51 PM

That totally looked like that greasy clay mud.... the kind where nothing has any grip, and if by change the knobbies were far enough apart to grip, they are filled with gumbo within a revolution of two. I grew up off roading (4x4) with my Dad and have to say tire choice in the mud is a trick/luck/art proposition at best. One needs to be intimate with the local dirt to make an informed choice. Do they have MTB/cross tires that use centrifugal force to clear the tread like 4x4 Monster Mudders?

The top guys all run either Tufo or Andre Dugast. I had some Tufo tubular clinchers and the max pressure was 65psi.....I ran em under my girth at 37psi....holy traction batman!

somnambulant 09-07-07 02:25 PM

Yeah, Page was saying in the interview that he now has the treasured Dugast sponsorship. :D Those badboys are pricey (and still handmade by Dugast himself)! http://cyclocrossworld.stores.yahoo....ttubulars.html

Here's the interview btw, if anyone cares: http://www.cyclingnews.com/riders/20...han_page_sep07

Wow that's impressive ... still making them after 55 years, 55 years!!!! Madness. No wonder they cost so much... how do you hand make a tire like that?

If he told you, you would either be French, or he would kill you after he told you. After 55 years, and the best in the world riding them, you are doing something right.

yep, definitely. white fixie?

too bad, I think that that would have been before I wiped out like an idiot on the wet streetcar tracks by MEC.
And, for the record, I had my first "nailed by a car while on the job" today. genius wasn't looking, and switched into the right lane infront of a parked car, and me, while I was in a full out sprint. Surprisingly, it wasn't as bad as I thought that it'd be.. there was something almost poetic about doing a half front flip over the bars. And then the ground showed up. :D All in all, I'm no longer as worried about falling while wearing clips and straps as I once was... :)

fun times.

Yeah dude, that was you! You were heading West so it was probably just after the MEC tracks. Those tracks are NOTORIOUS! I've been lucky thus far but have watched friends go down in them before.

The pull into the right lane right after a parks car is also a NOTORIOUS move. The one time I've been seriously hit in this city was as direct result of that move.

Stay safe, dude - see you around.

Danhalen 09-07-07 05:56 PM

Well I slept through the safety meeting. I'm going to be at the Artful Dodger on Isabella tonight if anyone is interested.

operator 09-07-07 07:12 PM

Almost got right hooked on my way over to cavern, ****ing cabbie.

Flimflam 09-07-07 09:34 PM

Nice meeting some of you guys, the days videos will be up once I get a look - hopefully they're not ****.

MattR, think I saw you tonight on Queen W heading east near the Gladstone - I was heading west admiring the sidewalk scenery.. :)

TIFF sure screws with traffic, both Bloor and Queen blocked off - but provides lovely scenery at times.

Flimflam 09-07-07 11:02 PM

OK finally uploaded. My ride from work to Cavern: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NbKHxGMpR8

Excuse the horrible angle/aim - not a usual issue ;) I'll be tweaking that a bit more tomorrow. Looks like the youtube processing stuff really goes to town, too.

Keith: Two questions:

1) Do you true carbon Hed rims? If so, does the tubular tire need to come off?

2) Do you still have that 61cm bike you mentioned on here a few days ago? if so, I'll take it!

Yes...no...and yes.

Flimflam 09-08-07 04:52 PM

I recorded my first "crash" today, sorry not to include you Wes ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7tShEx-S1M

The front wheel was turned way out, I clipped it going slow enough that it stopped me dead.

Tyler M 09-08-07 06:23 PM

Well, I did it. I ordered a Kona Paddy Wagon yesterday from Cycle Solutions, which had the lowest deposit amount of the stores I contacted. It should come in next week.

Some of you may remember me from a couple of months ago asking about Toronto ISPs. Since then, I have moved to the city and started courses at York. My ambitious plan to cycle to school each day probably won't actually happen (it's 18km one-way) but that's not to say I won't try it once the Paddy Wagon comes in. It's a 60cm 2008 model with the new gray color. I'm REALLY excited. Before it arrives I need to purchase a lock (I'm thinking Kryptonite EV-2000 mini?), a bell, and pedals. Probably I'll do straps because clipless isn't quite in the budget yet. What's a good store to buy these things? I can't afford to get gouged.

That being said -- what's not great about this bike? I've seen people sing its praises in other threads, but I know that it's a starter package. When I can afford to upgrade, on what should I put priority? Thanks for any input.

ApolloCVermouth 09-08-07 07:33 PM

I also just moved here for school. I'm waiting for my tools to show up in the mail so I can put my bikes back together. Does anyone know where to find (or trade) used parts in this city? This really is the land of old ten speeds and I think that's awesome.

Do it. I did 30km to UT one way my first year. I know darkmother bikes up from bayview/eglinton to York campus. And he does it rain or shine.

Parts unknown in kensington. On west side of Augusta, behind a white picket fence, south of nassau, north of baldwin. It's a garage shed.

Locks you're going to have to go local. Bell, any store. Pedals, depends what pedals. PM me. Pay the $5 and get a membership at MEC.

jeremywhitehorn 09-09-07 12:06 AM

not a whole lot wrong with the paddy wagon off the shelf as far as i can see. in fact, quite a lot better than most stock track bikes IMO.

Feel free to PM me regarding trades, I have way too much clutter in my apartment and there is soon to be more as I am likely purchasing another bike I don't need this week.
