Yes, he PM'd me once when he read that I was trying to reverse my heart disease with a drastic change in diet. He mentioned that he tried this, but couldn't keep it going beyond a year. Sunday will be my memorial ride.

Early 40's? My, goodness. Life is so fragile. As someone who just turned 40...very scary.

Damn. I'm not on a whole lot anymore but I've always enjoyed reading coastings post. A shame. I'll keep him in mind when I ride tomorrow.

Rowan and I did our coasting memorial ride today ... as Rowan describes below from his post in the Addiction thread ...



It was a good ride. Much hillier than our usual rides have been lately and it rained on us toward the end, but it was good. And coasting was very much in mind along the way.

I hope more is found about Coasting's leaving us much too early.
Early 40's if true is much too young but most of us have known others that have died much younger of heart disease....I have known a few in fact.

What I don't understand and hopefully somebody at some point can shed some light, is I am hearing two very conflicting things.

History of heart issues in conjunction with rigorous cycling as reported here by his hill climbing. Nothing more taxing on a heart. Most of us have experienced that heart is about to explode feeling when participating in a grueling, long steep climb in fact. I don't understand why he would take this chance if he knew he had a heart issue. Perhaps this will never be known.

I am not familiar with his historical cardiac problem. I can only comment from personal experience that a history of blocked arteries, angioplasty, and stent placements, even MIs do not preclude strenuous cycling. And fragile arterial placques can lie dormant for years and cause no pain or exercise limitations until they suddenly rupture, sending clogging debris down into narrower parts of the vessel causing an MI.

I believe that [MENTION=68086]coasting[/MENTION] expressed interested in hill climbing rides when he first moved to Taiwan. However, for at least the past year (the amount of time I've known him through the Addiction thread), he was most definitely not interested in hill climbing. I would post about it frequently and basically get a "that sort of thing sounds exhausting" response. Mostly in the time I knew him, he seemed to be a fan of a nice MUP ride with lunch afterward.

The cardiac death is pure speculation, I believe it has been thrown around because he had a past history of heart disease and his death was quite sudden (at least to his internet friends). Although he had also posted about an undiagnosed GI illness and speculated recently that he thought an ulcer had returned. Around the first week of April, he posted about having been sick and having lost weight as a consequence. So his illness may not have been as acute as we all imagine. Additionally, because of his undiagnosed GI condition, [MENTION=68086]coasting[/MENTION] had a mistrust of doctors. So it would not surprise me at all if he did not see a doctor regularly or when his symptoms returned.

Anyone with more BF history than me, feel free to correct my post. I honestly never knew him well even though we interacted frequently in Addiction. He was a good guy, part of the flavor of the place. He is missed already.

That's generally correct, but we don't know exactly how much medical care he had received lately. I don't think his commentary on medicine could always be taken at face value.
