Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In Memory of Coasting

We've lost another member of our forum family this week ... coasting. I'll leave it to @patentcad to fill in any details.

There is an ongoing conversation regarding this loss in the Addiction thread, but I thought he deserved his own thread, as well. Especially since this edition of the Addition thread will close shortly.

Feel free to post memories, links to threads coasting participated in, etc. And if you feel inclined to do your own memorial ride, as Velo Vol suggested in the Addiction thread, feel free to post about that here too ...

No precise details at this time. He had a history of heart trouble.

I completed my coasting memorial ride this evening. Pictures to come . . . later.

For those of you who may not know, coasting was an active member of this forum for many years. His death is quite unexpected, as he was only in his early 40s.

Little known coasting fact: he once had an imaginary beagle named Mutton.

Very sad. His dry, impish sense of humor generated a lot of smiles.

His sense of humor added so much to this forum. I really enjoyed seeing every one of his posts. He will be truly missed.

When I see something like this I am reminded how fragile life is and how all of us are just riding through for a relatively short time.
Sad news. I hope he was on his bike doing what he loved most.

Anybody here know coasting and can you give us a glimpse into who he was?

RIP...

I was just looking at his picture of his bike standing by itself in the middle of a forest road. It almost takes on a secondary poignant meaning now.

I think this was shortly after he moved to Taiwan ...

Another thread coasting started about a ride he did in Taiwan.

Climbed South Mountain in Phoenix with my son in law (on a 16/46 single speed)

Coming into the parking lot by TV towers
Riding my Shogun Selectra

Went back and rode the last 2 miles again with him
He's a runner not a big cyclist, but he would so hand me my ass if we were on equal equipment
The descent was fast and fun

coasting like climbing
