I enjoyed his posts...always unpredictable and fun to read. RIP Coasting. I'll dedicate my Sunday metric century to him.

RIP Coasting.

Early 40's? My, goodness. Life is so fragile. As someone who just turned 40...very scary.

bianchi10 04-24-15 06:39 PM

That's incredibly sad to hear.

Walter 04-24-15 06:40 PM

Damn. I'm not on a whole lot anymore but I've always enjoyed reading coastings post. A shame. I'll keep him in mind when I ride tomorrow.

Rowan and I did our coasting memorial ride today ... as Rowan describes below from his post in the Addiction thread ...

I was on the Merlin C110 Works carbon bike that I mentioned in an earlier post. It was actually quite nice to get back on that bike; I hadn't been on it since we moved to Hobart 18 months ago. It was built as a "trophy bike", but has done more than 8000km of various rides including several longish randonnees.

I also trialled a GPS unit that I bought cheap from Torpedo7. It's a Soleus and frankly... I am a convert to this newfangled stuff that allows you to upload to Strava and get maps and stuff. I am locked away in a private account, but it should enable me to keep a record of my rides.

So, thanks Charlie for the ride today. I am a bit solemn in the picture for obvious reasons, but the ride in general was pretty darned good.

It was a good ride. Much hillier than our usual rides have been lately and it rained on us toward the end, but it was good. And coasting was very much in mind along the way.

Campag4life 04-25-15 10:43 AM

I hope more is found about Coasting's leaving us much too early.
Early 40's if true is much too young but most of us have known others that have died much younger of heart disease....I have known a few in fact.

What I don't understand and hopefully somebody at some point can shed some light, is I am hearing two very conflicting things.

History of heart issues in conjunction with rigorous cycling as reported here by his hill climbing. Nothing more taxing on a heart. Most of us have experienced that heart is about to explode feeling when participating in a grueling, long steep climb in fact. I don't understand why he would take this chance if he knew he had a heart issue. Perhaps this will never be known.

Bunyanderman 04-25-15 11:32 AM

Too much rain for me to hit any kind of respectable mileage, but here is a photo at 4.7k feet looking down on 3.5k about 3 miles apart.

I am not familiar with his historical cardiac problem. I can only comment from personal experience that a history of blocked arteries, angioplasty, and stent placements, even MIs do not preclude strenuous cycling. And fragile arterial placques can lie dormant for years and cause no pain or exercise limitations until they suddenly rupture, sending clogging debris down into narrower parts of the vessel causing an MI.

I believe that coasting expressed interested in hill climbing rides when he first moved to Taiwan. However, for at least the past year (the amount of time I've known him through the Addiction thread), he was most definitely not interested in hill climbing. I would post about it frequently and basically get a "that sort of thing sounds exhausting" response. Mostly in the time I knew him, he seemed to be a fan of a nice MUP ride with lunch afterward.

The cardiac death is pure speculation, I believe it has been thrown around because he had a past history of heart disease and his death was quite sudden (at least to his internet friends). Although he had also posted about an undiagnosed GI illness and speculated recently that he thought an ulcer had returned. Around the first week of April, he posted about having been sick and having lost weight as a consequence. So his illness may not have been as acute as we all imagine. Additionally, because of his undiagnosed GI condition, coasting had a mistrust of doctors. So it would not surprise me at all if he did not see a doctor regularly or when his symptoms returned.

Anyone with more BF history than me, feel free to correct my post. I honestly never knew him well even though we interacted frequently in Addiction. He was a good guy, part of the flavor of the place. He is missed already.

RollCNY 04-25-15 03:49 PM

Heathpack, your summary is apt. He had avoided hills in recent memory.

That's generally correct, but we don't know exactly how much medical care he had received lately. I don't think his commentary on medicine could always be taken at face value.

BillyD 04-25-15 04:53 PM

Good summary Heathpack, I was too lazy to write up all that.

no. I just saw this. so damn sad, and he was way too young. He will certainly be missed.

Everybody gotta run sometime...

He's on his way back to where he came from. That's not all bad. Fair winds to you, Coasting.

Damn.

Coasting as the only person from this hell hole I ever met in real life. I even liked the guy.

It's very upsetting to hear this news.

Strength to those he cared about.

Cross-post from the Addiction Thread:

@coasting Memorial Ride

Last training ride on the Breathless Agony course today, that ride is next Saturday. I gathered 4 friends and off we headed to Yucaipa. I tried to explain to the who @coasting was and what had happened and why this ride was dedicated to him. I'm not sure they fully got it, but whatever, that's ok. BTW, my BF friend @Lesper4, was on the ride. So really it was a double memorial ride I guess.

We started in an uncoastingish manner by climbing up through Damnation Alley until we turned left at this bend in the road:

http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...8D89D48A85.jpg

We continued on, uncoastingly, climbing semi-continuously, through 30 miles of ponderosa pine forest:

http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...36C52D53AF.jpg

Finally we got to the top of the mountain and ate our granola bars. Now we were getting into coastingtown:

http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...B30EFA298E.jpg

A storm blew through yesterday and it snowed in SoCal in April. It was pretty so I took a pic:

http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/x...FAA1753D67.jpg

Then 30 miles down hill back to the car, a very coasting-friendly end to the day. :)

In the end it was 65 miles and 7000 ft of climbing and seemed kind of easy. It was cool today, so I'm sure that's it. Next weekend will be 20 degrees hotter and we'll arrive at this final climb with around 40 miles/4000 ft of climbing in our legs already and a little later in the day. Yikes, should be fun.
@coasting, wish you could have made it to the States to visit your SoCal relatives. We could have done a nice flat ride along the PCH, you would have liked that, I'm sure. Wherever you are now, I hope all your rides are easy and all the food delicious.

mzeffex 04-26-15 09:04 PM

He'll be very much missed.

Rest in peace, Coasting. I hope you remembered to pack your seatpost.

UnfilteredDregs 04-27-15 03:16 PM

Well...

I went Coasting this past Sunday.

Did 108 miles, a circle route...across into New Jersey, Northwest to Harriman State Park, North through the park, summit at Bear Mountain, crossed the Hudson river on the Bear Mountain Bridge, then South a bit along the riverside until Ossining, then traversed two ridgelines to the East until finally getting onto the old NYC Putnam Division Right of Way which has been converted to a bicycle path...

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

Great ride, stupendous weather, it was a bit of a grunt at parts but nothing major. I wanted to go faster but my compadre, and old, broken, former CAT3, with some trophies, kept us at an overall 14.2 mph ..He's got hip, back, pain issues...

Anyhow... we warmed up for the first 40 miles to Sloatsburg. Complained about life, people, significant others, family, etc.. Was a brisk mid 40s in the morning.

Now, pardon the photos, my cameras settings were a bit bonked, and I kept hitting the wrong buttons, etc...so, my exposures ain't up to my usual snuff. :D

At our first "nature" break, somewhere close to the Saddle River, this copse of trees caught my eye:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

I didn't take too many photos traversing Joisey suburbia...Here's a little crook, just passed the Southern entrance into Harriman State Park:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

Where the magic begins... Seven Lakes Drive, Northbound to Bear:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

I had packed some of MY Cubano sandwiches for the ride... Jamon Serrano, cilantro, lime & cumin marinated pork loin- sliced thin, all on a fresh toasted and smashed baguette, with melted aged Gruyere, schmeared with French butter, Dijon, and dressed with some organic bread and butter pickle chips. Here's the lunch spot by the side of Lake Tiorati:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

Not quite Spring yet in these parts, we're just flirting with some green. Anyhow, Rak, my riding partner, wasn't feeling doing the Summit to Bear because his hip was bugging him, but I'm like a moth to flame, I didn't ride 67 miles to not climb Mt. Bear...Not a bad ascent at all, 4.5 miles of mostly 5%, pitches to 11% here and there, nothing a little grunt & spin can't take care of..From the top:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

I did the descent but was ticked off because I got stuck behind a car doing about 27mph on the way down. I managed to pass them at a point and open it up a bit.

Picked up some water at Lake Hessian and then headed on to the bridge:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

Bear Mountain Bridge... (Rak...):

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

UnfilteredDregs 04-27-15 03:16 PM

Across the way there is Route 9D:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

we ascended there for a rather inspired descent into Peekskill, a nice twisty 3 miles.

Choo-Choo along the Hudson:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

Bear Mountain Bridge:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

The Hudson, looking South:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

After ascending 9D to the vantage point, we parked the rides and soaked in the view for a bit:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

Descended into Peekskill and picked up a few 24Oz PBRs:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

Peekskill was the 80 mile point. Funny how the body changes after a bit, you get all warm & giddy, the endorphins wash the pain to a dull thud in the background and it feels like you can ride another 80...or maybe that was the PBR's?

Anyhow...got back on the old rail-trail and spotted some interesting trees again:

https://content-na.drive.amazonaws.c...N?viewBox=1745

A great ride. I thought a lot about Coasting. I'm 44 . I barely knew him, but he struck me as a very funny chap with that dry English acerbic wit. the world needs more folks who make us laugh at ourselves.

Smooth riding, and perpetual tailwinds @coasting.
