Well, the article is aimed at beginners, so he probably didn't want to recommend anything too advanced. And it does look like a good way to end up on your buttocks, until you get good at it. A horse is a lot more stable than a bike.

I find it odd that Sheldon advises against both the cowboy mount and cyclocross dismount stating that it puts a lot of stress on the frame, but then shows a video showing how both of them are necessary in cyclocross.
