I've just never really cared for them. I prefer eggs, bacon, sausage, toast or biscuits, hash browns.

Nothing wrong there. Breakfast is my favorite meal, I'll eat virtually anything except grits.

Heathen

Truthfully......

Being from the north I hated grits. Then I lived in the south for several years. I can tolerate the worst of them and I find the good ones tasty.

There were waffles at Sunday's CX race.

That's the issue. My folks were both from the north so we never had grits growing up. My very first experience was my first morning in college in Dallas. I thought it was cream of wheat cereal. Grits have never crossed my lips since.

Did you have to ride over them or run over them?

That is my recollection as well. On my first trip south I thought they were Cream of Wheat.

A few years ago at a Gideons Saturday prayer breakfast I asked the waitress if they had grits. She said they did, so I ordered them. Unfortunately, the were boxed, instant grits. They weren't bad, but they weren't very good. I've never ordered them there since.

I rode to the van. Put my bike away. And ran to the waffle tent.

I don't mind grits if they're loaded with cheese.

try this:

make the french toast but omit the sugars and cinnamon and syrup, then slam some cheese between two of them to make yourself a fortified breakfast grilled cheese sandwich

Personally, I'll take mush over pancakes or waffles or French toast.

Have grits every morning in place of potatoes.

My wife mixes in jelly. I just use butter and a little salt and pepper.

Even home made grits from scratch vary widely. I did a tour in Georgia recently and had some of the worst grits and some of the best. Grits and consistency don't seem to go hand in hand.

I also learned in GA not to ask if the grits were instant or home made. Nasty looks may not be able to hurt you but they can sure scare the Hell out of you.

I had Hershey's chocolate syrup on my waffle yesterday.

Also, adding cheese and bacon to waffle mix is pretty awesome. Makes it more savory than sweet. If you want to get really crazy, throw in some jalepenos too.

To tell the truth, it wasn't a full-out run. More of a jog.

I agree. I've had some, what turned out to be boxed grits that were quit fine. I've had some scratch grits that were just plain awful.

Grits seem to have the end of the scale taste.

Really good or really bad.

Had a lot of mush growing up and my local diner makes mush from scratch, not store bought. :thumb:

There is a place in Syracuse that specializes in waffles. Their menu includes both savor and sweet options.

Would chocolate syrup make bad grits better?
