In the spirit of "Being John Malkovich" (a good film which I highly recommend), I prefer to think of it as 41 and a half.

Speculation and incorrect. Go on, do tell. It's nearly Christmas. |
Yesterday morning, we were lying in bed and LoP said "Do you want to ride over to Delta Park?" (I ordered a laptop for my kid for Christmas that my mom is giving her and we had it sent to Oregon to save the sales tax.) I said "How long would it take?" He said he was just kidding but that it would take forty minutes each way. We discussed it a little more with him each time insisting he had been kidding- probably because it was cold out and he knew I'd complain- but a few minutes later I said "F*** it. Let's go." It was rather cold out and I did complain but otherwise we had a nice ride that was much shorter than he had predicted.
On the way home, we stopped at Taco Bell where a new breakfast creation caught my eye. I give you the "Biscuit Taco". If I got it again, I'd get the one with the sausage because I think the grease would make it less dry. Also, in this one the bits of egg and the bits of bacon separated and that was disappointing. (Definitely can't touch the sausage and gravy pot pie that Swansons makes as far as incongruous foodstuffs combined for breakfast.) LoP and I both took pictures of it. I asked him if he wanted a bite and he said "No thanks. I don't want any part of that but it's going to be a great discussion on the Addiction thread." And I think the packaging is cute. In fact, I found the menu-board picture of the sausage Taco Biscuit cute which is why I ordered one at all so I don't know why I didn't order the one with sausage. Oh, yeah. Because bacon. http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...pskht0kruo.jpg |

I've changed jobs more often that I care to remember. Several of them were because the company went out of business, I don't think it was my fault. Some I left because I worked for an Ogre and some I left because by keeping my eyes and ears open I recognized the company had a precarious future. Such is the life in consulting engineering. My wife on the other hand has been with the same company for nineteen years. If she had to start looking for a job, she would not know where to begin.

It pains me to hear so much dissatisfaction with employment. The best advice I can provide is to stay prepared for the desirable situation that may be just around the corner. I made a couple of really poor decisions early in my career, or so they seemed at the time. I left a terrific job at top notch corporation to be able to relocate back to the home town (which really wasn't worth returning to except for family being there). Then a couple of years later I refused a promotion with the new company, because it would have meant leaving the hometown and moving back up north again. But as I learned, you only have to get lucky once in order to wipe all the mistakes away.
When it became obvious that the hometown was the root of all my employment issues, and a move away was absolutely necessary, I used that opportunity to find the best possible situation in a good city for the family. That turned out great and resulted in a fulfilling 29-year career with one of the best employers in the country. All my prior errors were erased in one stroke. Sure, having the full 36 years all with the last employer would have been nice (pension and savings plan-wise), but that wasn't something I had ever thought about way back at the beginning. At the start, I never even considered working for them. Live and learn. Guys, decide what change is required and don't be afraid to make it. Keep your eyes open for opportunity. Good luck. |
Guys, keep your eye on "jersey, how tight is too tight" It is the next rising star thread.

I didn't really mind retail work (convenience stores). It's nice to work a job you don't have to think to hard about or take to serious. You show up, make sure the place stays clean, order in what needs to be stocked, unload the truck, toss out the spoilage, move the customers along, and tie out the register at the end of the day.
I've always let angry customers roll right off since it's not really my problem they have a stick up their bum. Just smile and make them as happy as you can, get 'em out the door, and move on. I did end up with a lot of double shifts (and overnights) and it didn't pay all that great which is why I did eventually move on. I never really hated it though. Or maybe I'm just looking back on it fondly now... |
The weather people can't find their ass with both hands, but I'm the bigger fool for listening to them. Ah well. 4 hours, Z2, 7% in Z1, all the rest in 2 and 3. Pretty good, considering. Saw c_bake out there, running incognito.... Used to seeing him on his Kestrel!

Oh, and "White Industries T11 Hub" has great promise to go far. Don't miss it. I am out of it, however. That guy has insulted me once too often.

I had a chuckle just now while trying to fold a fitted sheet. Reminded me of the recent thread.
Amazingly, that's a topic even Seinfeld missed. |

FWIW, although it's very early, IMO the new digs are changing the culture for the better... or maybe it's just that I am now old enough not to give a crap about things I should not give a crap about. |
I chased the road nazis around Saturday and again Sunday. They did not drop me. Getting some fitness together. Starting to enjoy the pain and suffering of the fast rides.
Down the road weenie rabbit hole once again. I like it here. The more I do it the more I want to do it. It's a problem. |
My friend Sandy is a distributor of high end road bike gear. He had that top secret Sram wireless electronic shifting stuff on his bicycle this weekend. He says it should be on the market by mid 2016. The time consuming hang ups: FCC approvals (and each of the 50 countries they want to market this product in require regulatory approval of radio gear like these shifters) and wading through Shimano's vast patent portfolio to make sure they're not infringing.

I was told that my predecessor would come into the office, close the door, and not be heard from again the rest of the day. I only close the door if I'm on a call or meeting with clients.

Question for you... Would you leave it as unbranded or would you buy some decals on ebay and put them on? |
