Need advice: steel vs aluminum <$1200

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I also could use advice on going new vs used, used bike resources (besides ebay). I'm going to be using this bike for century rides and general fitness (w/ multiple rides during the week in the 20-40 mile range). I've been told over and over I'm a 58cm in most brands (especially trek). This is my first nice cycle, so I'm not looking to go too cheap, but I don't have the scratch for a $2,500 bike either. The people at my LBS really talked up the 2005 allez elite.

if your LBS wants to sell you a Specialized, what about the Allez "Cro-Mo"?

It's steel, baby! How much are these?

Just noticed that the "Cro-Mo" Specialized 'retails' for about $1700.

I'm no expert on US prices, but I think it might be tough finding a good, new steel bike under 1200 bucks
