Can I use my old rear mech with 9-speed?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can I use my old rear mech with 9-speed?

Hi, I'm currently using an 8-speed setup with a Shimano 600 rear mech (about 8 years old) and changing to 9-speed. My bike shop guy reckoned I could use the same mech on a 9-speed cassette, though he thought it wouldn't be perfect. Is he right? Or should I start trawling ebay for 9-speed mech bargains, and get even less work done?

Your 8 speed derailer will work just fine for 9. The cassette width is the same the main things you'll need to change is the chain and the cassette. Just as a general query: How fresh are your chain rings?

The chainrings are 2 years old but quite fresh. How do I tell if they're 8-spd or 9-spd rings? My lbs says that if I try using 8-spd I'll get loads of chain-suck. The big ring says "Shimano SG A-53" on it.

Thanks

You will need to change the STI shifters unless you are using friction (non-indexed) shifters & the chain . Everything else should be fine as it is. You won't get any joy using 8 spd shifters with a 9 spd cassette.

Yup, new shifters are on their way. But you reckon I'll be OK with my current chainrings?

They'll be fine. I've never found it necessary to replace the chainrings when doing an 8 to 9 speed conversion.

Change the rings if you want, but you don't have to

Thanks guys. I'm amazed at how expensive it would have been to buy two new chainrings.
