Suggest some comfortable, value-priced, padded liner shorts

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Suggest some comfortable, value-priced, padded liner shorts

Yeah, it's getting on spring,* but cool mornings still call for tights.

My tights aren't padded, so I usually wear regular padded cycling shorts underneath. I'd like to find some less-expensive padded liner shorts/underpants to act as a base layer instead. Something I could have a handful of, and not have to be too careful with in the wash, such as one might be with higher-end bits o kit.

Any recommendations?

*Minnesota has a winter storm advisory for tomorrow night, March 23, with the potential for six inches of snow.

Yes, yes, I'm with you on buying good stuff. The price will be long forgotten, while the quality lives on. My grandpappy was the same way.

But, anyway, yes, Sugio. Looking at their liners. $48 or so. Nice.

I have to assume a lot of you go this route:

For longer rides (>20 miles), I'd wear my regular bike shorts under the tights. If I got warm, could take those tights off and be good to go.

For shorter rides where I know I'll leave my tights on (or commutes where I'd put on another pair of pants when I arrive), no need to grubby up my good bike shorts. I'd just wear a less-pricey padded base layer, which I could toss in the wash every day and not worry about.

Anyway, that's my theory.

Triathlon shorts have very light padding.

I wear a pair of Zoot tri shorts to the gym under Nike runing shorts and ride with them in the hottest weather up to 50 miles.

Inexpensive tri shorts could easily be worn as underwear or hot weather commuting shorts.

I have several pairs of liner shorts but the ones I like best are from Cannondale (local Shop purchase) and believe it or not, a pair from Nishiki, purchased at Dick's Sporting goods for very modest price ($18, maybe?). Both have thin pads that I favor.

There's always these. ATD Men's Ball Sack Cycling Short - Room for the Package

Yes, I selected them because they are called ball sack, wanna fight about it. I like the Aerotech stuff too overall. The Made in the USA label helps too.
